I wish to inform the agrometeorological community that Professor Kees Stigter, former president of the WMO Commission for Agricultural Meteorology and founder of the International Society of Agrometeorology INSAM, passed away two days ago at the age of 79, in Indonesia, where he usually resided between his numerous travels.
Thanks to his dedication, sense of initiative and seemingly endless work capacity, Prof. Stigter contributed considerably to increasing the international visibility of agrometeorology.

I just heard about watermelons larger than usual which are not grown for consummation but for certain sort of irrigation. If anybody knows something or if you have some useful text please let me know. Thank you in advance Regards, Branislava Lalic
Dear Dr. Branislava Lalic, Regards, My first reaction to your question is as follows 1. What you heard is correct 2. Scientific reason: The response of water melons to drip or sprinkler irrigation is very good. Even though genetic character plays a dominant role in size of water melons, the seasonal conditions further dominates the genetic character. Example: Under summer conditions and dry weather irrigation improves the size of water melons grown in sandy loam soils Sincerely,Dr.Murthy
I am looking for some recent (= post-2000) daily radiation data of the type that is used as inputs in crop models next to Tx, Tn and rainfall. Does anyone know if there is a "repository" somewhere? Eight to ten station.year collections would do, but they should ideally come from different climatic zones, covering equatorial to temperate.
Do not have very specific general data, but participated in a study of some students from the UK on daily solar radiation for solar cooking in northern parts of Africa, using both ground-based and satellite data. Was published in BAMS a few months ago and is also accessible on-line. I now use this also in our solar cooking programme for the Sahel, technique now used by about 180,000 refugees.
there is currently a PhD position open at the Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation at the University of Bonn, Germany.
