a paradigm shift has become urgent. Animals are to be addressed as living beings to take care of and valorize, not only as a source of commodities to exploit. Scientific information, policy options, good and best practices, technological advances and innovations are available for us to take better care of our animals and valorize their contributions to several important Sustainable Development Goals. For these reasons, the FAO Sustainable Livestock Technical Network will periodically

We are pleased to announce that a new Tripartite operational tool is available to support countries in the implementation of joint risk assessments for zoonoses, complementing
the existing Tripartite Zoonoses Guide.

The Operational Tool on Joint Risk Assessments (JRA OT) has been developed by the Tripartite organisations (FAO, OIE and WHO) and technical experts to provide guidance on how to set up a joint risk assessment process at national level. While it describes step-by-step how to conduct each component of the process, it also provides model documents and templates to support its implementation

Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. Although not very lethal in adult animals, it causes serious production losses and is a major constraint in international trade. The FMD situation has improved markedly in recent years particularly in Europe and some countries in south east Asia and South America, but the disease remains endemic and at a high prevalence in many countries in Africa,

Nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere, land and water and is a crucial element for building structures of living organisms. However, the excessive and inadequate use of nitrogen in agriculture has major negative impacts on people and the planet.

They have traditionally suffered from poor understanding, marginalization and exclusion from dialogue.
The Pastoralist Knowledge Hub is an initiative bringing together pastoralists and the main actors working with them to join forces and create the synergies for dialogue and pastoralist development. FAO hosts the Pastoralist Knowledge

Bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are
of paramount importance for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity.

COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes the need to prepare for, prevent, detect and respond to similar diseases. The risk is highest where there is close interaction between wildlife and intensifying livestock or agricultural production, and is often exacerbated where agriculture has encroached upon or put pressure on natural ecosystems. Particularly risky “spillover settings” include live animal markets and regions where there is a rise in wild meat consumption.
