A new paper describing the adoption of the Enhanced Biosecurity Practices (EBP) recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Vietnam’s Department of Livestock Production (DLP) and comparing profitability between adopters, who were supported by a project, and non-adopters in 5 provinces of Vietnam. On-farm interviews were conducted on 34 broiler farms, 20 chicken breeder farms, and 40 hatchery operations. The study found that all project supported model farmers were aware of proper biosecurity management and its role in chicken production. The percentage of farms that adopted EBPs differed widely between the two farms groups (model and control farms).

While the impacts of such environmental factors on food security are well known, the effects on food safety receive less attention. The purpose of Climate change: Unpacking the burden on food safety is

Farm animal welfare - video interview

a paradigm shift has become urgent: we need to address animals as living beings to take care of and valorize, instead of a source of commodities to exploit. Xavier Manteca Vilanova, professor of animal behaviour and animal welfare at the School of Veterinary Science in Barcelona, gives us an overview on why animal welfare is important and what are the links between farm animal welfare, animal production and health, as well as, human health and well-being.

Managing wild boar populations to protect against African swine fever

Many countries around the world are currently in the grip of an African swine fever (ASF) outbreak. ASF is a viral haemorrhagic disease causing up to 100% fatality in domestic and wild pigs, for which there is no effective vaccine or treatment. This disease does not infect humans but causes economic losses which threaten food and nutritional security, affect trade, and present a serious challenge for sustained pig production...[Read more<http://www.fao.org/ag/againfo/programmes/en/empres/news_221119.html>]

although antimicrobials are vital to defend people, animals and plants against infections, their misuse and overuse can lead to their failure as microbes develop resistance to these life-saving treatments. Everyone has a role to play in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We can all do something to prevent and control AMR and join the campaign. Dear all,
Carryover of veterinary drugs in feed can occur during feed processing, handling, transportation, delivery or in feeding animals on-farm. The risk of unavoidable and unintentional veterinary drug residues from feed carryover and/or transfer from feed to food of animal origin is unacceptable when it causes adverse health effects in target and/or non-target animals and/or humans consuming food originating from these animals. If carryover is not properly managed, contaminated feed can directly harm species that are sensitive to the unintended veterinary drug they consume, and /or can result in residues in food of animal origin such as meat, milk

Dear All,

The FAO Animal Production and Genetics Branch (AGAG) considers that it is critical to have a clear understanding of the ongoing and past initiatives and gaps related to Livestock FFS<http://www.fao.org/3/I8655EN/i8655en.pdf> especially for short-life cycle animals, primarily poultry and pigs.

We would like to create a Technical Working Group on Livestock FFS. The main goal of the working group will be to compile good practices in Livestock FFS, identify gaps, needs and other areas of improvement to contribute to the successful implementation, replication and scaling up of Livestock FFS activities. Dear colleagues,

We are happy to present to you the new FAO-IUCN joint publication titled Crossing Boundaries: Legal and policy arrangements for cross-border pastoralism.

In many countries, pastoralism has historically been practiced in areas that are now partitioned by international boundaries. This is a major barrier to sustainable resource management and to pastoral development. However, there are examples from around the world of efforts to facilitate transboundary movements and transboundary ecosystem management by pastoralists. This publication examines how pastoral mobility has been impacted by the creation of unnatural boundaries within their landscapes and how societies cope with these constraints through

Gridded Livestock of the World, Version 3

Livestock-based agri-food systems impact heavily in the domains of food and nutrition security; livelihoods and economic growth; animal health and welfare; and climate and natural resources (FAO 2018). Livestock make positive contributions in each of these areas, particularly with regards providing nutritious food and micronutrients to mothers and children in poor countries, enhancing livelihoods and building resilience against climate and economic shocks. But there are also risks associated with a burgeoning global livestock sector. Livestock feed production competes for land with crops grown for direct human consumption. As systems intensify smaller producers may

Join us for the 6th webinar of the Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) in the agricultural sectors. <http://www.fao.org/in-action/kore/news-and-events/news-details/en/c/1052870/> This webinar will focus on “the potential for EbA to build agricultural livelihood resilience in Dryland Ecosystems”. This webinar will explore the potential for EbA in building the resilience of agricultural livelihoods in dryland ecosystems. Dryland systems are the agro-ecosystems characterized by extreme climatic variability with low and erratic precipitation, water scarcity and high susceptibility to land degradation, including desertification, soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. These challenges are paramount and can result in food insecurity within dryland communities.

Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the partners' meeting of the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub that will take place on Monday, 3 April 2017, in the Lebanon Room at FAO HQ.

This one day meeting is a great opportunity to exchange ideas with different organizations working in the field of pastoralism. We intend to have interesting presentations on new methodologies and plan to create space for enriching conversations and networking. We aim to gather ideas for a strategy to shape the future of the partnership.

Dear all,

Our colleagues in TCE are conducting a rapid livestock and pastoralist assessment in the border areas of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia where there is a drought situation, increased and unusual livestock movements and livestock deaths. They are developing checklists for the survey and in this context, they are looking for any examples of emergency livestock checklists, which we could reference and adapt.

Dear all,

As you know, often in weekly FAO Livestock Technical Network Newsletter, we have a section called "on the desk of", with books recommended by one of the network members (e.g. Henning, Massimo, Henk, Olivier, Alexandra and many others).

Would you like to recommend any interesting book to your colleagues? Something you have read recently, interesting, inspiring, not necessarily on livestock, nor necessarily technical or scientific, but that could contribute to our knowledge and make us better professionals and wiser people.

Dear colleague,

Within the activities of the FAO Livestock Technical Network, we are preparing next Thematic Bulletin which, as proposed by some colleagues, will address "Animal Welfare" and will collect selected reference documents and information resources, major events and players, but also possibly some information on FAO activities (projects, position, publications, forthcoming activities, etc. ). We would be very grateful on any information/indication/suggestion/resource you can send us, possibly by 18 April. Any other contribution you may think of is also welcome. Kindly indicate if there is any other colleague we should contact.
