New FAO website for Armenia

FAO has launched at the beginning of September 2013 a new website for its country representation in Armenia<http://bit.ly/17hW3uG>.

This website has been launched within the framework of the organization's new communication policy.

The new FAO corporate website together with the country websites are meant to provide cohesive information about the Organization and a clearer view of FAO to both its staff and the outside world.

38 countries meet anti-hunger targets for 2015

Thirty-eight countries have met international targets in the fight against hunger, chalking up successes ahead of a deadline set for 2015, FAO confirmed today. "These countries are leading the way to a better future. They are proof that with strong political will, coordination and cooperation, it is possible to achieve rapid and lasting reductions in hunger," FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said.

A precious resource for food security: Sago palm

On 22 March 2013 the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific has launched the Regional Sago Network for Asia and the Pacific (SNAP)<http://bit.ly/13rPhyF>. The initiative is led by recognizing the importance of promoting underutilized indigenous food crops such as sago palm to ensure food security in developing countries.

Women and Forests: Improving food and nutrition security in Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso, women are increasing their knowledge about the nutritional value of forest products and run effective community-based enterprises with the help of an FAO project.

Women in Burkina Faso rely traditionally on forest products for a variety of purposes: from food to medicines, from clothing to tools and manufacturing of dyes. Non-wood forest products can contribute to improve the lives and incomes of rural women; they also can be used during the drought season to replace the cereals intake

New FAO Database to monitor Greenhouse Gas Emissions

FAO has launched the FAOSTAT Emissions database of comprehensive time-series statistics on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from agriculture, forestry and other land use sectors for all countries, over the period 1990-2010.

The aim of FAOSTAT GHG dataset is to help countries assessing and reporting their GHG emissions and climate mitigation options from agriculture, reporting to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change at least biennially, starting at the end of 2014.

Information from the field

In December 2012, FAO appealed for USD 443 million over the next three years to help Somalia recover from severe famine which ended early 2012. During years of conflicts, high food prices and droughts tens of thousands died, mostly children under the age of five and over 4 million Somali were thrown into acute food insecurity. Despite slow recoveries recently, still 2.12 million Somalis remain in crisis. 2012 has been an exciting year for the FAO Country Profiles portal.
It has been a year of changes, many of which just started and will be fully implemented from 2013. This year has been the beginning of a wide process of renovation of the FAO Country Profiles portal, which migrated to an efficient platform. The portal is now integrated with the FAO Data Warehouse, which was launched last week. One of the benefits originating from the use of data.fao.org is the use of a new mapping system,
