Family Farmers raise their voice at COP27

[cid:image006.jpg@01D904D3.5AE83C00]"We are critical for global food security!" Organizations representing more than 350 million family farmers and producers publish an open letter at COP27, calling on world leaders to work with them to build a stronger food system.

They call on governments to boost adaptation finance for small-scale production and promote a shift to more diverse, low-input agriculture.

Highlights from the 2021 Annual Report

The Forest and farm Facility (FFF) is now about halfway through its second phase. As documented in the FFF 2021 annual report<https://pubs.iied.org/20836g>, its impact is scaling up. The increasing visibility and influence of smallholders and Indigenous Peoples can largely be attributed to the hard work and engagement of forest and farm organizations and their members, supported by the FFF and other like-minded bodies. Together, we are showing the power of these vibrant communities and what their actions on behalf of their members can deliver.

Dear FFF Facilitators,
Thanks for your great interest to be part of the meetings where different carbon measuring tools have been presented and discussed with the aim we could use them in the FFF countries by our partner FFPOs. Now you are all better informed and all the technical teams have put their specific information in the attached excel table, now it is time for you - representing the FFF countries - to do a last reflection based on the information attached, including many interesting links. Then - after your reflection probably also consulting with key country partners - please

Getting climate funding to grassroots level
Rural communities in the global South are often all too familiar with the adverse effects of climate change on their land and livelihoods, yet only 10 percent of global funds reach the local level with just 1.7 percent accessible to locally controlled organizations. It is time for grassroots organizations to take their place as required beneficiaries and accredited partners for external climate finance.

Dear all,

Today is the last day of work of Josephine Querido, our editor these last months. Josephine was identified by IIED communications team which I thank for such a good recommendation.

It has been a real pleasure to work with Josephine. She has been extremely active in promoting the successes of the great work done in the countries. Some of her recent articles include the launch of the cocoa campaign in Madagascar, an editorial for the indigenous peoples'day, an article on the strategies to help women entrepreneurs, a story on innovative farmers during the pandemic. I am sorry it has taken so long to send this. We hoped to send it along with the Forest and Farm Facility Mid-Term Evaluation (MTE) being prepared by the FAO Evaluation Office, but have yet to receive the latter and it may be weeks before that draft gets revised and we can distribute it, so we decided to send the minutes now.

Dear friends,

The new year is upon us; and we all hope and expect that it will be better than the last.

For many rural communities throughout the world, 2020 was devastating. In addition to the pandemic itself, they faced economic crises, difficulty accessing markets and services, and the growing effect of climate change. But in general, the better organized they were, the better they weathered the storm. Women leaders were key in that. In that context, the importance of programs like the Forest and Farm Facility, which help grassroot organization to address social hardship, climate change, and other key

Dear all,

Very nice presentations were prepared by country facilitators for the FFF Retreat. During our last FFF team meeting, we found it would be useful to share it in PDF with all of you. I am sending it on behalf of Francesca who extracted it in PDF and post it into We transfer. You just need to click on the link, download the ZIP file, save it somewhere on your computer, desktop for example, and open the folder. The link will expires on 24 December, 2020.

Dear facilitators,

Please find attached the draft communication strategy of FFF Phase 2 that was developed during 2020. This document includes inputs from partners and is not final. It summarizes the communications activities that we are already implementing all together. I hope you will find it useful. It will be further reviewed, laid out and improved after the Retreat and the arrival of the new Manager. Next Monday we will have a session on communications during the Retreat.

Dear FFF Facilitators,
As our FFF Retreat will start in a few hours, virtually, I would just want to anticipate that when asked to present yourself briefly (name, role), I will also ask you to say ONE sentence what FFF means (for you) in your country, complementing the following:
"FFF in [name country] means/stands for ..............................." . You can now reflect on this :)

With your support, some stories are already being planned for the FAO Home page, and I will continue to contact you to develop more of those. In the past we already published a few stories that you can find here on the FFF website: http://www.fao.org/forest-farm-facility/success-stories/en/. FAO just shared a new brief on gendered impacts of Covid-19. It provides a very good overview of the specific challenges women are currently facing, why they are more at risk than men and how FAO, governments and partners can provide support and facilitate tailored response: http://www.fao.org/3/ca9198en/CA9198EN.pdf

Please share this within your networks and continue to share with us good examples from your countries of how FFPOs can support particularly women in this time of crisis.

Dear all,

Hope this email finds you well and safe!

As you might already know, we are developing an email Update with FFPOs/COVID related information, that will be sent every two weeks. On this purpose we started to put together a List of Distribution in order to share the Updates among all within the FFF family.
I would be most grateful if you could send us back all emails from our FFPO, governmental and other partners to include in the List.

Dear FFF Facilitators,

FFF has collected some information with you in the countries on FFPOs challenges, experiences and best practices in this COVID crisis situation. The information is being put on the FFF website to be shared between all partners. FFF is also developing an email update every two weeks with only a few items selected. We hope that this advocacy material will help spread the message on the critical FFPOs play in food security, livelihoods, business and on the resilience they build with their members in general.

Dear extended FFF team, Steering Committee members, resource partners, FAO Country Representatives, regional, sub-regional and headquarters based FAO colleagues, partners, Indigenous peoples, family farmers, producers (women, men and youthful), and all well wishers.

The first phase of the Forest and Farm Facility is now drawing to a close, and with the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere (see below) we move forward in a transition to the new light of FFF Phase II. We have so much to be proud of from our collective work over the last four years plus, and we will be sharing the impacts and learning

Dear Facilitators,
We are coming to the close of our wonderful team effort and should all be approaching this ending point with a sense of deep accomplishment. We need now to put in a final push to cross the finish line in our winning position and ensure that we can record our achievements in a way that will be useful for others to replicate, and for us to attract more resources to an expanded Phase II.
I am writing to follow up on several earlier e-mails, conversations with all of you and of course your ongoing communications with different members
