Farmers in the Fukushima region of Japan have begun planting rice again following the nuclear accident of 2011. Rice exports from Cambodia are on the rise, while Indonesia is grappling with food price inflation.
The May 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports that FAO is predicting India will retain its title as the world's leading exporter of rice this year, despite shipping about 2 million tonnes less of the grain than last year. Thailand's strong currency has sent its sugar exports into a prolonged slump. Over the past week, staple food commodity prices remained relatively stable in all reporting countries, except for Myanmar. Wheat prices in dropped by 12 percent during the last week of February. Maize prices increased by 6 percent during the same period of time. Although maize is produced mainly for feed, maize prices have been gradually increasing since early this year.
In the February 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU), China strives to calm markets over its increased gain imports, while FAO raised its forecast for paddy production in Asia in 2012 by a modest 1.6 million tonnes or 0.9 percent. Robust output in China, Indonesia and Thailand drove the increase.
The December 2012 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports that Typhoon Bopha has inflicted serious damage to the banana crop in The Philippines, a major fruit export for that country. Sanctions are forcing Iran to pay higher prices for commodity imports, wheat flour prices are rising in Afghanistan because of limited milling capacity, and scientists have decoded important sections of the wheat genome.
