Dear Mountain Partnership friends,

As mandated by the Mountain Partnership members during the last Global Mountain Partnership meeting in Erzurum, we have co-organized several events in New York to encourage the recognition of mountains in the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The latest draft of the working SDG document is very disappointing. Despite our collective efforts, mountains have almost disappeared from the text. Indeed, they are mentioned only once under goals #15 (terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity).

A CALL FOR PICTURES

To better reflect the lives of people who reside in mountain areas in our communications materials, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat is building a photographic and video repository. We are especially interested in uplifting, inspirational pictures of people engaged in activities in rural or urban areas that show the social, economic or cultural value of mountains. Mountains or valleys should be visible in the pictures of people who are doing something – working, farming, taking part in a traditional or other activity.

International Mountain Day 2013
Proposed theme:
Mountains - Key to a Global Green Economy

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as "International Mountain Day". FAO is the U.N. Organization mandated to lead the observance of International Mountain Day each year.

In the follow-up to Rio +20 we would like to continue underlining how the benefits derived from mountain regions are essential for sustainable development. Yet while mountain goods and services are vital to achieve "green growth", there are growing threats to their sustainable supply.

Dear Mountain Partnership focal points,

As you know, mountain ecosystems are particularly affected by the impact of climate change. Some of the most evident indicators of climate change come from mountain areas, such as the extensive retreat of glaciers that has been observed from polar to tropical regions in recent decades, the increasing number of disasters and the expanding desertification processes, just to name a few.
