They may be under threat, but forests and trees outside forests have enormous potential to help deal with the many social, economic and environmental problems facing the world today. We asked Tiina Vahanen, Assistant Secretary General of the World Forestry Congress 2015, to describe the global importance of forests, and what she sees as forestry's greatest challenges.

300 years of sustainable forestry
Celebrations are being held this year to mark 300 years since a German administrator became the first person to define the concept of sustainability. Hans von Carlowitz is being honoured for his seminal work, Sylvicultura oeconomica, which is generally accepted as the first publication to articulate the concept of forest sustainability.

FORESTS FOR FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION

FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS

FAO is hosting the first International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition in Rome from 13-15 May.
Around 400 participants from over 100 countries will be attending the conference, which aims to increase understanding of the crucial role that forests, trees on farms and agroforestry systems can play in improving the food security and nutrition of rural people, especially in developing countries.

Celebrating Earth Day

On Thursday, 18 April, a press conference will be held at the Sheikh Zayed Media Centre at FAO headquarters, Rome, to announce the celebration of Earth Day on 22 April. The aim of Earth Day is to inspire awareness of, and appreciation for, the Earth's environment.

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests. The Day will celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

FAO will be celebrating the Day with two events. In conjunction with the Third Mediterranean Forest Week, the Day will be webcast live with a press conference, launch of the publication State of Mediterranean Forests and tree planting activities in Tlemcen, Algeria.
