Dear Members and Friends,

Over the weekend there had been a security breach in the Mountain Partnership email newsletter, distributed by MailChimp; several accounts have been hacked including ours. Hackers have been sending out malware-laced spam that you might have received in the form of the Peak to Peak newsletter. We are taking this breach very seriously, we are working on resolving the issue as quickly as possible.

Today, 11 December 2018 is International Mountain Day, which is an occasion to raise wide

Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

An opportunity has arisen to propose an inclusion in the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) 2019, which has been mandated by the United Nation's Member States (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/globalsdreport/2019<https://owa.uvu.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=RlLJvoymW-JF0fRBxyAqiULGhvaYLuKry7IqK9Qw2GSQiXWEMifVCA..&URL=https%3a%2f%2fsustainabledevelopment.un.org%2fglobalsdreport%2f2019>).

The GSDR aims to strengthen the science-policy interface and provide a strong evidence-based instrument to support policymakers in promoting poverty eradication and sustainable development. It is a key means to follow-up on and review the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Dear Mountain Partnership focal points,

As mandated by you during the last Global Mountain Partnership meeting in Erzurum, jointly with many MP members, we have co-organized several events in New York to encourage the recognition of mountains in the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The latest draft of the working SDG document is very disappointing. Despite our collective efforts, mountains have almost disappeared from the text. Indeed, they are mentioned only once under goals #15 (terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity).

We are especially interested in uplifting, inspirational pictures of people engaged in activities in rural or urban areas that show the social, economic or cultural value of mountains. Mountains or valleys should be visible in the pictures of people who are doing something – working, farming, taking part in a traditional or other activity.

International Mountain Day 2013
Proposed theme:
Mountains - Key to a Global Green Economy

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as "International Mountain Day". FAO is the U.N. Organization mandated to lead the observance of International Mountain Day each year.

In the follow-up to Rio +20 we would like to continue underlining how the benefits derived from mountain regions are essential for sustainable development. Yet while mountain goods and services are vital to achieve "green growth", there are growing threats to their sustainable supply.

Dear colleagues,
this is an interesting discussion, however to really follow it those, who not attended the task force meeting would need to get more information in form of minutes or a report on the MP homepage.
Recently I realized some projects on Protected Mountain areas in Chile and Colombia, and there is some evidence that K N Vajpai is right in his pessimistic conclusion. However, the Alps and the Carpathians count with Conventions, and the objective to enhance a Mountain Convention does not seem too bad for me.
I would like to add more ideas, but I am on

Mountains have been neglected in the past and any further negligence

In the past 5 or 6 years, there has been a question flashing on and

International legal structures for Climate Change and…, why there
should not exist a world

Dear Mountain Partnership focal points,

As you know, mountain ecosystems are particularly affected by the impact of climate change. Some of the most evident indicators of climate change come from mountain areas, such as the extensive retreat of glaciers that has been observed from polar to tropical regions in recent decades, the increasing number of disasters and the expanding desertification processes, just to name a few.
