Dear readers,

the trilogue between the European negotiating partners, Commission, Agriculture Committee and Parliament engaged in the revision of the EU organic regulation is entering the decisive round. It does not appear possible to adhere to the target of getting the organic legislation off the ground by the end of June. Although the trilogue is taking place behind closed doors, BÖLW, representing the interests of the German organic industry, is being kept informed about the stage reached in the negotiations in Brussels. BÖLW Managing Director Peter Röhrig tells us about the status quo and what challenges still

Dear Reader ,
You may recall that we took a delegation of organic farmers to the COP21 climate negotiations. This month we released a short video message from them talking about how climate change affects farmers and sharing the messages they send to decision-makers. We hope you enjoy watching it and share it amongst your networks.
Happy reading!

Dear readers,

in principle and on paper organic controls in the EU work quite well. However, in practice there is still a lot that could be improved in many countries. This is the conclusion we can draw from three reports presented by the Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) of the EU that have summarised the results of a large number of audits carried out by the staff of the FVO from 2012 to 2014. Please find more informations on our website<http://organic-market.info/> and continue to read the details there.

Interview: "Agroecology is an epistemological revolution"
Written by Diana Quiroz<http://www.agriculturesnetwork.org/persons/254142>- last modified Mar 24, 2016 06:23 PM

Victor M. Toledo is a Mexican ethnoecologist and social activist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His work focuses primarily on the study of agroecological and knowledge systems. In this interview, Victor M. Organic Meat and Products More Nutritious Than Non-Organic

A new meta-analysis based on 67 published studies comparing the composition of organic and non-organic meat products has found that organic milk and meat contain around 50% more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than non-organic. In addition to organic milk and meat, the nutritional differences also apply to organic dairy products like butter, cream, cheese and yoghurt. The study is the largest systematic review of its kind and was led by Newcastle University with an international team of experts.

CUBA'S ECOLOGICAL FARMING REVOLUTION SHOWS A DIFFERENT PATH

Cuba experience shows how agro-ecology is far superior to chemical-based agriculture.

By Stuart Munckton<https://www.greenleft.org.au/taxonomy/term/851>

"If you want to see what tomorrow's fossil-fuel-free, climate-change-resilient, high-tech farming looks like, there are few places on earth like the Republic of Cuba," Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, wrote in a November 19 Slate feature on Cuba's system of agro-ecology<http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/future_tense/2012/04/agro_ecology_lessons_from_cuba_on_agriculture_food_and_climate_change_.html>.

Dear colleagues,
As a response to Nicolay, I am very pleased to say that there were a number of familiar faces from the Lagos meeting in Dakar last week. I found the Symposium to be quite interesting and civil society organizations and organic movements were well represented. The event has also received quite a bit of media coverage, I am sharing a list of news reports below.
Best,
Allison

Definitions of different agricultural management systems were recently summarized as “systems can be regenerative or degenerative”. In the Brazilian documentaries below, you can witness the emergence of an approach beyond organics, thanks to farmers’ innovations.

Organic Agriculture a Viable Option to Feed and Nourish the Planet

Today, 795 million people today are still food insecure and achievement of hunger targets is challenged by issues of access, infrastructure, climate, macroeconomics and political stability.

Drawing on scientific evidence and field experiences, the Charter of the International Organic Action Network in Expo Milan 2015 entitled "Organic Agriculture Can Feed the Planet" explains why and how that organic agriculture represents the only food and farming innovation of the last century that is a socially, and economically and ecologically resilient approach for the production of food and agriculture-based raw materials.

Dear Fellow Seed Advocate,

As the climate changes and our farms experience increasingly severe drought, storms, pests, and disease, we're actually being handed a tremendous learning opportunity.

By knocking our food systems off balance, nature is not only showing us where we need to improve, but also how to do it.

Nadia --

The American food system is broken. Chronic diet-related diseases cost US$500 billion annually, and agriculture is the main source of water pollution in America. The Food and Drug Administration reports that 80 percent of all antibiotics are fed to animals who aren’t sick, while excess healthcare costs in the U.S. from antibiotic resistance are estimated at US$20 billion annually.

Dear All,

You are most warmly invited to participate in this very new discussion group which is part of a larger Earth Food Hub initiative<https://dgroups.org/fao/indi-sci-energies/>.

It's focus goes beyond the usual renewable and bioenergy concepts to develop a better understanding of all kinds of energies used in agriculture that can enhance and protect production, improve health and nurture the environment, from social and economic to the bio-physical and spiritual environment.

Dear readers!

In all probability 2015 will be the year when the natural cosmetics sector will again experience double-digit growth in turnover. That was one of the results at the 8th Natural&Organic Cosmetics Conference on 6 and 7 October in Berlin. The approximately 220 participants were brought up to date on current developments, figures and trends in the industry. The market analysis carried out by GfK reveals that customer reach and the repeat purchase rate have risen continually in the past five years. Around 13 percent of German consumers met all their needs for cosmetics and toiletries

Dear Readers!

At the 9th European Organic Congress from 11-13 June 2015 in Riga, Latvia, two main topics were on the agenda. The Latvian compromise on the proposal for a new organic regulation was discussed intensely and as we know by now partly successful. The discussions were not only on the proposal but also on possibilities to use policies for green growth. Designing the organic future and making the vision a reality was begun by workshop groups who started the strategy development based on the launch of the vision at the congress. Members of the European Commission,

Please find under this link a new article on financial competitiveness of organic agriculture: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2015/05/27/1423674112.abstract

Some recognize organic agriculture as being important for future global food security, whereas others project it to become irrelevant. Although organic agriculture is rapidly growing, it currently occupies only 1% of global cropland. Whether organic agriculture can continue to expand will likely be determined by whether it is economically competitive with conventional agriculture. Accordingly, we analyzed the financial performance of organic and conventional agriculture from 40 y of studies covering 55 crops grown on five continents. We found that, in spite of lower yields, organic

Dear readers!

Glyphosate is the most commonly used active ingredient in non-selective herbicides worldwide and in recent years a large number of studies and investigations have been published that prove how dangerous it is. Environmental and consumer organizations around the globe launched campaigns to draw attention to the dangers and to collect signatures because the re-assessment of this active substance to approve its use in the EU in 2015 is imminent. A short time ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified this poison as “probably carcinogenic”. Please find more information in our report.

IFOAM – Organics International Calls for Stop to Soil-destroying
on International Mother Earth Day

Mother Earth Day is a stark reminder of the fact that we must take better care of the planet and her natural resources. Soil is one of these resources. Its preservation is essential to protect biodiversity, grow healthy food and secure our sustainable future. Yet we are losing 30 football fields of soil every minute thanks to unsustainable agricultural practices. Farming organically can bring this to a halt, restore soil fertility and build soil health.

Sustainability is increasingly important for organic and non-organic businesses, but the metrics used to measure performance are diverse, ranging from improved energy efficiency (and associated reduced emissions and costs) to improving on-farm biodiversity.

In a project supported by the Ekhaga Foundation, the Organic Research Centre (UK) and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL (CH) have had intensive discussions about how to measure the sustainability of organic farms, building on experience in developing monitoring tools, such as SAFA. A key part of the project involves identifying sustainability themes highly relevant for monitoring organic agriculture.

This claim that organic or agro-ecological farming can feed the world and must feed the world (not only humans) has been made before with very reasonable arguments (IAASTD, a.o.). The How? and its effects have been defended for a long time. Good to have better summaries.

The last article below also draws the attention to the who?, i.e. the small landholders at least! Yet there is still another major step missing to improve rural prosperity and thus food security: the price of food and who gets what share of the price.

It seems that the green revolution of Africa is right on track: More resources in less hands. More resource dependence on external suppliers and property holders (intellectual as well as physical). Germplasm banks under control of global seed giants. Open promotion of GMOs, and next, most likely, the seed laws to support the remaining business. Diversity in the savannah, maybe - for tourists, but for the rest of the land and the people: industrial uniformity? Businesses have learned from India, decision makers apparently not, assuming that there still is some free choice.

Dear Nadia,

Recently, we decided to let people turn the tables on us. After years of assessing the sustainability of others, we asked 124 leading experts to assess us.

We created a feedback survey to ask tough questions and invite tough answers. We also promised to share the results, so a brief sample of what our peers and partners have to say about us is below.

This morning I saw the link on the Have Your Say section of the intranet logon page, posted by Paola Franceschelli.

It's beautiful to see official attention to this knowledge and wisdom and also to see it confronted with the narrow objectives of the industrial 'world'and its resulting control psychosis.

My personal feeling is that we need to marry these two worlds, a simple partnership will not do; yet, these very unequal and different newlyweds will need much tender loving care, wisdom, coaching and concrete support, to create at least mutual respect, then some understanding and hopefully a spirit of

THIRD WORLD NETWORK INFORMATION SERVICE ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Organic Food is Nutritionally Far Superior to Non-Organic Produce

A ground-breaking meta-analysis of 343 studies led by Newcastle University, U.K., has found that organic food delivers significantly more benefits compared to non-organic food.

Among these are that organic food contains up to 69% more of key antioxidants and significantly lower concentrations of cadmium (50%), nitrates (30%), nitrites (87%) and pesticides. The frequency of occurrence of pesticide residues in conventionally grown crops was four times higher than in organic produce. This increased to seven times in the case of fruit.

The Soilmate, which was unveiled in a guerrilla gardening initiative in the centre of Berlin, is a specially-designed carton with organic tomatoes, soil and basil seeds. The Union of Concerned Scientists has emphasized the urgent importance of agro-ecological solutions to address the dismal state of U.S. agriculture which it describes as a "dead end". Citing how the country's industrial food production system has been detrimental to air, water, soil and human health, it says that agro-ecological farming or what it calls "healthy farms" are the way forward for sustainable food production and will be far better for the people, the environment and the economy.

UNEP, in partnership with FAO, has selected food loss/waste as the topic of this year's World Environment Day (5 June). You may wish to consider signing-up on to the related social networking campaign (see below). Also, Republica's headline this week-end was on this topic, using our food wastage research data: http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica/archivio/repubblica/2013/05/25/se-il-pianeta-spreca-il-cibo.html

Debate on Organic Food Production
On Tuesday 14 May 2013 a debate on European Organic Food Production was held at the European Parliament (EP), organized by the MEP Sirpa Pietikainen and the European Parliament’s Food Policy Interest Group.
Ms Sirpa Pietikainen stressed the great interest across the EP’s parties and the countries about food. She added that is difficult to say which the right food policy is for the EU and that it was important to have a debate on a relevant issue such as the organic food production.
The first speaker of the debate was Mr Joao Onofre, DG

You may remember that last year, I participated in publishing the outcomes of a scientific study on organic agriculture and soil carbon in PNAS (see http://www.fao.org/docrep/016/ap563e/ap563e.pdf). As expected, the article was criticized but I am glad to hereby inform that PNAS accepted to publish our reply. This is the kind of scientific debate we need among us, rather than colleagues attacking organic agriculture without willing to get into the heart of the matter.

Here we go again;
yet another evidence for the failure of proper risk assessment and the large uncertainty and high risk of releasing commercial GMO products before thorough investigations and even after risks have been indicated.

"To return to the original choices before EFSA, these were either to recall all CaMV 35S promoter-containing GMOs [[which includes most GMO crops released for import or growing in the EU]], or to perform a retrospective risk assessment. This retrospective risk assessment has now been carried out and the data clearly indicate a potential for significant harm. The only course of action consistent with
