Hello Katarina,
Hello Ulla,

what do you think about this development?
For Germany it does not sound good. Because till now the children at school did not like "Pure milk". Our experience shows, that IF they drink milk, they only drink flavoured milk (mostly chocolate).
How is the situation in other countries?

Dear School Milk Friends,

FYI, on January 30, 2014, the European Commission published a proposal bringing together the School Fruit Scheme and the School Milk Scheme. In a context of declining consumption among children for these products, the aim is to address poor nutrition more effectively, to reinforce the educational elements of the programmes and to contribute to fight against obesity. With the slogan "Eat well - feel good", this enhanced scheme from farm to school will put greater focus on educational measures to improve children's awareness of

The Dairy Outlook list is now open for your comments, questions and information: remember we depend on members to keep the list alive by supplying information .... if people only read and never submitted anything: there would be nothing to read.

Looking forward to an active 2014.

Hello Megan,

Thank you for writing to me. Unfortunately, we don't provide any supporting material. I would suggest that you contact Dairy Farmers of Ontario - which has a school milk coordinator who I'm sure will be able to assist. For example, in the past Canada has held school poster competitions in association with World School Milk Day, which was coordinated at the provincial level by the various farmers organizations.

Dear All,

A search of internet has turned up a lot of references to the 2013 World School Milk Day celebrations. I'm attaching a selection below: both links and also videos.

As we have seen from reports sent in by List members, geographical coverage is much wider than suggested by the list below as language based searches (in English, French and Spanish) would not generally pick up reports on celebrations in other languages.

It is also great for day schools where they prepare porridge for kids, This porridge could be prepared using milk in the mixture. The additional cost of milk can be discussed with parents so they understand the importance of proper nutrition for their kids.

Sometimes it doesn't take much to promote World School Milk Day effectively. For example, looking at the screen shot below from the Waynesboro (Virginia, USA) public schools' <http://www.waynesboro.k12.va.us/main/schools/> menu, there's a nice graphic promoting the Day. I like seeing mention of World School Milk Day in this way as it illustrates that the Day is becoming widely known in its own right and doesn't necessarily depend on any particular organization (including FAO) to promote it, which means that it is more likely to continue to be celebrated in the future.

WMD 13 in Malawi – celebrated in Blantyre

Another great day of dance, dramas, speeches, prizes… and late milking.

It has been a tough year as Malawi recovers from its own (man made) ‘perfect storm’ hitting the economy – shortages of FX, fuel, electric and just about everything else needed to keep an economy and a dairy industry afloat. The recovery has included the bitter medicine of high inflation and stagnant wages, but at the moment most are still pretty grateful just to have survived.

Just a reminder to members to give some thought to celebrating World School Milk Day on 25 September.

Discussion on starting both these days took place on the FAO e-fora in June and July 2000; arising out of this, it was decided to hold the first World School Milk Day in September 2000 (last Wednesday of the month) and the first World Milk Day the following June (2001). Dear Michael and others list members,
DOL has been very useful to me since 1998, when P.R. Gupta, the late publisher of Dairy India Yearbook, suggested I join. The email format works best for filing and retrieving information. Many thanks to Michael and Barbara Senfter for moderating DOL. Will Barbara return after her summer holiday?
Best wishes,

A move to e.g. LinkedIn would be fine with me, as long as the discussion would remain moderated. Several LinkedIn groups were corrupted by spam quite soon after their establishment, and moderation is essential to avoid this.

Michael and All,

I have been doing extension education and industry relations work relative to dairy markets and policy for 35 years and I think that those of us who are on the supply side have to admit to ourselves that there are a lot of passive consumers of our work who, for various reasons, are not interactive. This may be simply because they are interested in the subject but don't have a lot to contribute. Some may be daunted by the size and global dimension of this

Yes, it is very good to get feedback! Forgive me for not responding. We are already sharing the report locally within the Tanzania dairy Development Platform, having been circulated by members such as The International Livestock Research Institute (copied). We shall give you feedback on how this is helping within our local context where we are facing milk quality issues in our market.

Thanks to all those who provided comments (listed below), including Bruce's suggestion that I needed a cappuccino on FAO's famous roof terrace.
Well, having just come back from having the same, I must admit I feel a bit more sanguine ..... however, being by nature the sort of person who doesn't see why he should be pushing if no-one else is, I fear that my feeling of well-being will only be short lived - unless we have regular participation by members as an accompaniment to my coffees.

Dear All,

The FAO report on Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition is available at: http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/i3396e/i3396e.pdf

I know that perhaps members need cranking up after the break; however, I have to say that simply sending out messages and not receiving comments or contributions in reply is rather a thankless task ... hardly makes me feel like opening the mailbox each morning, when all I see are bulk mailings and circulation reports. After all, this is not meant to be a one-man-show.

Good Morning,

I agree with Alok concerning the benefits of aseptic cartons with respect to the sensitivity of milk and the hygiene factors. There is another point, and that is fortification. I live in Africa and have come to realise that any food that has exposure to the elements (Light,Oxygen and bacteria's) has little potential to create a stable base for any micronutrient compound. Nutrients destabilise with oxygen and with light, both of which are absent from aseptic packaging, affroding safe distribution to nutritionally deficient children in the

The equipment is sophisticated, costly, big-tech, and the slightest glitch compromises sterility. The cleaning must be perfect, the temperatures right, the packaging well sealed. From Aseptic Food Processing and Packaging Industry Association (AFPPA)- India

Under-nutrition continues to be a widespread problem in the country. Despite an increase in food production, the lack of infrastructure coupled with problems of choosing the right processing and packaging of perishable goods persist in India. There are several challenges when dealing with distribution of milk.
Aseptic technology provides an ambient shelf life of 3 – 6 months without the need of a cold chain. Also, aseptic packages being tamper-evident cannot be adulterated –ensuring that the packaged milk is safe, hygienic and nutritious. When choosing the correct channel for distribution

Sterilisation at village level???

Sterilisation is surprisingly difficult to achieve, even in a high-tech plant. Realism and technical knowledge are helpful when it comes to achieving practical things, such as getting milk from cows to schoolchildren.

From an ideological standpoint it would be wonderful if all the middlemen in value chains could be eliminated. City dwellers would all buy directly from farmers, or farmers would operate high-tech industries and sell directly to urban consumers. Unfortunately the real world is much more complicated and unsatisfactory.

The theme will be "the time travel of milk", and there will be something about history, present time and the future. We will also celebrate the Milk Maid. It was 40 years ago we elected the first Milk Maid and it has gone on ever since, only today the Maid is more an expert about milk and nutrition. Our present Milk Maid continues. We also send a press release about the Day.

The link between the two projects is to test the hypothesis that 'local milk for local schools' can serve as an important incentive for stakeholders to develop smallholder dairy as well as reduce malnutrition among children.

Dear Eduardo,

Your observation is well appreciated. However looking at the emerging markets in tropical or hot climates. The following few points also need to be kept at the backend.

1. Dairy comes under fragmented industry meaning local milk need to be processed and marketed in local markets in fresh form.
2. Cost plays an important role as with other packaging like carton the cost of technology installation is very high and customer may not be willing to subsidise the exorbitent cost of package( little utility for a product to be procured fresh and consumed) arising out of cost inefficiencies

Dear FAO Dairy Out-lookers,

Eduardo has some points but he has focused more on global level costs away from an individual consumer. I also hope the costs are not purely speculative. Some of the issues raised can also be raised about other forms of packaging and the best is to have evidence based concerns. I said at one time that the Researchers can help us get some conclusive comparisons and cost benefit analysis, both at an individual consumer's level and on a global level.

At a glance, plastic pouch seems to be something good enough and cheap for milk.
But if you analyze it deeper, there are some other hidden costs that should make you think:

- If there is no good milk quality, bacterias will start growing faster and faster

- What is the cost of cold distribution?

Following on from the note on only low-fat milk being allowed under the national school lunch programmes in the USA. Here is a link which provides further details of the programme in general: http://febp.newamerica.net/background-analysis/federal-school-nutrition-programs
From here, one interesting fact is that spending on milk is very small - 0.1% of the total programme - and the cost of milk within the programme has not increased over past 25 years.

This year, the government implemented a revised school feeding programme - Qali Warma - utilizing evaporated milk as opposed to fresh milk. This means that milk producers can no longer supply the schools directly and as a result have had to look for other markets - where they are receiving lower prices. The move may affect up to 120 000 producers - with some farmers saying that they will move into beef production, as a result. The Ministry responsible for the programme has cited health and quality concerns for the move to evaporated or UHT milk - a claim rejected

A plastic bag weighs less than a carton, but in places where there is no plastic-bag-recycling, cartons are much more biodegradable, and goats eat them happily, while in most places where there is recycling cartons can be put in the recycling bin.

Continuing with the discussion on pouches - I'm attaching below and article about a school in Alabama, USA. Interesting, the introduction of pouches came about as a result of a change in the Federal Government's school feeding guidelines which now only allow 1% or fat-free plain white milk or fat-free flavored milk to be served. This presented taste and temperature challenges in providing the milk to the children.

Milk bags have become popular in many countries including Europe and Canada but has as yet to really take off in America. The bags tend to need jugs to be placed in, however Daylesford<http://www.daylesfordorganic.com/engine/shop/page/about+Daylesford> in the UK came up with a sleek and simple designed biodegradable bag with an integral handle which gave another option for the consumer. Continuing on the theme of pouches/bags, here's an interesting article showing some alternatives. Obviously, pouches lead to a loss in convenience; however, looking at some of the benefits - such as reduced volume and cost of packaging - this seems a small price to pay.

In richer countries, I believe that it will require a sustained push ... or legislation ... to lead to their wider adaptation. For poorer countries/consumers, perhaps the lower cost in itself would be sufficient?

Dear Outlookers,
As Nancy observes, the consumers have problem with pouches. But the obvious problem of the pouch is that if you are not completely emptying it after opening, it is not easy to handle - does not sit well with contents. Maybe there is need for more work on handling of the plastic pouch particularly if the content is not completely emptied on initial opening. Try attaching a sitting base and an outlet with reusable screw-able covers - but maintain the cost advantage over the others. Where are the Researchers?

Dear all,

Pouches allow for the resource poor to access at least some milk viz expensive packaging materials. Of importance though is the employment of the right gauge for the paper to allow for recycling hence better environmental sustainability.

Hello,

In Mauritania, fermented milk in pouches has been produced and sold since the eighties including 1/8 litre ones. However, the dairies currently making these small pouches all use imported milk powder and no doubt imported starter culture.

Our dairy, Tiviski, first attempted to produce traditional fermented milk, using fresh pasteurized camel or cow milk and local traditionally fermented milk as a starter culture (because the flavor is so good). We bought a nice new little goat skin, specially treated for milk, and tried to use the traditional stuff to make our own starter. We quickly found that the cartons

Dear all

You may be interested in reading the attached newspaper clipping from Kenya (The Standard, 19 February 2013) titled, "Dairy firm takes popular mursik to shops".

The story is about Ches Dairies, the first dairy company in Kenya to market traditionally fermented milk products. Mursik is a traditional sour milk product of the Kalenjin community in Kenya. The traditional way of making mursik involves spontaneous fermentation of the milk in a gourd through the action of mixed microflora. Ches Dairies is marketing mursik in plastic pouches that are now commonly used in Kenya to package liquid milk.

Hello

A few years ago, in Argentina, we were about to start a study of milk consumption in a school where the majority of children's parents were from Bolivia. Our nutritionist were doubting to continue the study or not, since this kind of population (indo-Americans), in general have lactose intolerance.
What surprised us was that this was not the children problem, as a difference to their parents. And it seems that the real problems was that their parents were not used to drink milk. As it could happen with anyone who stops drinking milk for a long time, and after

Dear Members,

in Germany it is difficult to find out the amount of children which are allergic or have problems with lactose.
The statistics are only about whole population (5-15 % of all Germans, mostly adults and older people). So we think there are really few children (3%).
Per year I get maybe 3 to 5 telephone calls where somebody asks if we also offer lactose free school milk. We don't offer lactose free products!

Hi everyone:

I believe that many doctors don't diagnose correctly the "lactose allergy" misinforming the pacients and making perturbing recommendations to the children parents to avoid milk in diet.

I think that it's a really need to capacitate doctors and nutritionists in this issue.

I find your article very informative and more so interesting. We went into the business bottled pasteurized milk business some years ago and had to jump out of it quickly after finding out the quality control problems that goes with the inappropriate type of packaging. We were employing a batch pasteurization packing in HDPE plastic bottles. Least to mention the quality of fresh milk entering the plant we were unable to operate the milk business profitable coupled with the fact that we live in the tropics where the heat is a factor.

Greetings to all on the 13th World School Milk Day!

In Sweden we'll start a one month long tour around the country. We'll stop in ten cities and visit kindergardens together with the chef of the year. Together with the chef at the kindergarden, they'll cook a nice lunch meal and share experiences. At the same time they are cooking, I am talking about the importance of a nutritious lunch served with a glass of milk together with the educators.

My wife and I watched the Kenya "Stay Young, Do Milk" advert & thought it would make people laugh at the bling. She said, 'It's totally cute, very nice.' In teaching geography, I've been surprised at the popularity of hip-hop culture in most countries around the world, so it might retain more milk drinkers into adulthood.

I would like to reply to John's comment below. Having seen so many programmes fail, I believe sustainability should be the starting and end point of programmes. A failed programme does little long-term good to the children that receive the milk and serves as a barrier initiating new activities by those seeking to improve school nutrition.

It is an inapropriate advert and is in no way indicative of the industry...completley out of touch with the reality of what the milk industry is about and what children want.
I have friends who switch TV channels and who are appalled that the Kenyan people have allowed such an ad. The sooner it is off the air and billboards the happier most people will be.

Hi all,

I think this adverts objective is to get more Kenyans ( young) increase their milk consumption. And not just in the regular drink of tea but as a whole drink.

However they could do more since not everybody is happy with the hip hop hype..

The advert was as a result of discussion amongst major processors on improving consumption of pasteurised milk hence the reason why we have all big players as sponsors.

Thank you to Charles for sending in this message a couple of months ago. I've had it in my in-box intending to reply at the right moment.

Firstly, although I only know the Tanzania system third-hand, mainly through Charles's reports, I have followed the way the programme has developed and I believe it has much to recommend it. To begin with, the programme was developed by the Tanzania Dairy Board with, as I understand it, little or no help from outside. This meant that it started small and it had to be financially viable from the very beginning. Also, somewhat

It was our 12th celebration and required 24km of dancing cloth to be printed for the occasion. We seem to add 2,000m each year which contributes to the color of the highlands over the next few months and reminds everyone about who is in the cow club.
