Dear Subscribers,

WHO/OIE/FAO H5 Working Group reports a new clade designated 2.3.4.4, the Evolution of the influenza A(H5) haemagglutinin. Please see the full report below.

Dear Subscribers,

There was an interesting paper published in the Veterinary Research a while ago on wild bird surveillance entitled "Evaluation of effectiveness and efficiency of wild bird surveillance for avian influenza" and thought it worthwhile to share with you. My apology for those who have already seen this paper.

The study aimed to assess which method of wild waterbird surveillance had the greatest probability of detecting highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 during a period of surveillance activity, the cost of each method was also considered. Lake Constance is a major wintering centre for migratory waterbirds and in 2006

There was a recent paper entitled "Multiple reassortment events among highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses detected in Bangladesh" published on Journal of Virology, volumes 450-451, February 2014, Pages 297-307. Abstract and link to the original article are provided and hope this article is of interest to you.

ABSTRACT: In Bangladesh, little is known about the genomic composition and antigenicity of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses, their geographic distribution, temporal patterns, or gene flow within the avian host population. Forty highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses isolated from humans and poultry in Bangladesh between 2008 and 2012

There was a recent FAO media release entitled "Surge in diseases of animal origin necessitates new approach to health - report" describing about the change of disease landscapes (http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/210621/icode/).

Focus on root causes and prevention needed

Population growth, agricultural expansion, and the rise of globe-spanning food supply chains have dramatically altered how diseases emerge, jump species boundaries, and spread, according to an FAO report released today. A new, more holistic approach to managing disease threats at the animal-human-environment interface is needed, it argues.

There was a recent publication entitled “Wildlife health investigations: needs, challenges and recommendations”. This article identifies requirements and challenges inherent to wildlife health investigations, reviews important definitions and novel health investigation methods, and proposes tools and strategies for effective wildlife health surveillance programs. Impediments to wildlife health investigations are largely related to zoological, behavioral and ecological characteristics of wildlife populations and to limited access to investigation materials. These concerns should not be viewed as insurmountable but it is imperative that they are considered in study design, data analysis and result interpretation. It is particularly crucial to remember that

There was a recent publication on "A strategy to estimate unknown viral diversity in mammals". A summary of the paper appeared on media release of Columbia University's Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) on Wednesday 28 August 2013 (http://cii.columbia.edu/blog.aspx?cid=sD8BEj).

First Estimate of Total Viruses in Mammals

New York (Sept. 3, 2013)- Scientists estimate that there is a minimum of 320,000 viruses in mammals awaiting discovery. Collecting evidence of these viruses, or even a majority of them, they say, could provide information critical to early detection and mitigation of disease outbreaks in humans. Dear Subscribers,

Enclosed please find the recent publication and commentary on the global situation of HPAI and the multi-sectoral engagement for effective interventions against the global threat of H5N1.
