Dear all,

The One Health (OH) approach addresses health threats at the animal-human-plant-environment interface, fostering multisectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration for better and more sustainable outcomes. Although the benefits of the OH approach are increasingly recognised, funding and financing of OH investments at country level remain a challenge.

FAO and CIRAD, together with representatives from the Quadripartite and World Bank, are collaborating on a Return on Investment (ROI) of One Health study. We are in the process of collating and analysing existing evidence through a literature review and this questionnaire, with the aim of generating an evidence base on the ROI

Dear Partner,

Animal health emergencies are evolving, and at times with devastating impacts. From African swine fever to highly pathogenic avian influenza to lumpy skin disease, animal health diseases have the potential to affect livelihoods, pushing already food insecure communities closer to the brink.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Emergency Management Centre for Animal Health (EMC-AH) works in partnership with internal divisions, country and regional offices, and international partners, to reduce the threat of high impact animal diseases to food security, agricultural development and trade. Increased risk of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in the Southern African region
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a viral zoonotic disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause severe symptoms in animals and humans. The disease can result in death and abortion in RVF-infected livestock. An epizootic disease in animals, with spillover to the human population, tends to develop extremely rapidly following abnormally high seasonal rainfall at the local, national or regional scale.
FAO maintains a RVF Early Warning Decision Support Tool (RVF DST) based on precipitation and vegetation anomalies, among other environmental factors. According to the RVF

Increased risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreaks in wild bird populations in Africa
FAO recommends countries in Africa to be on high alert for wild bird mortalities due to H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Given recent reports from West and Southern Africa detecting the virus in Great White Pelicans and coastal birds respectively, the risk of HPAI introduction into other African countries and outbreaks in wild bird populations is regarded as high. Countries should have in place enhanced measures for early detection, diagnosis and outbreak response, in both wild birds and poultry.

Manufacturers of feed and feed ingredients, livestock farmers, animal source food producers, distributors and salers need to collaborate to identify and manage potential health threats. Collaboration between these entities enables the development and application of appropriate risk management strategies for safe production and use of medicated animal feed. FAO and WHO convened an expert meeting to review the causes of veterinary drug carryover in animal feed and transfer to food, the known risks of such carryover to human health and international trade and suggest appropriate risk management strategies. The report of this expert meeting will be forwarded to Codex

Technical guidelines on rapid risk assessment
for animal health threats

Occurrence and spread of animal health threats can be mitigated when a timely risk assessment is carried out to inform decision-makers on prevention and response including control measures. FAO developed technical guidelines on rapid risk assessment to provide a simple and practical methodology that national veterinary services and other stakeholders can use to assess the risk level of emergence, occurrence and/or spread of animal health threats.

While increasingly unpredictable, and seasonal, climate-related disasters continue to cause massive hardships for farmers and their animals in Asia and the Pacific, the world's most disaster-prone region, volcanic eruptions can cause catastrophe.
In particular, during the last two centuries, volcanic eruptions in rural areas of Indonesia and Philippines have resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of human lives, and untold numbers of farm animals. One eruption in the early 1800's, that initially was reported

We are happy to announce the FAO Publication ‘Risk Communication in animal disease outbreaks and emergencies’ that can be accessed at

http://www.fao.org/documents/card/en/c/ca7561en

Risk Communication by the State Veterinary Service plays an important role in disease risk mitigation and is an integral part of risk management during animal health emergencies and zoonotic outbreaks. Effective communication recognises its unique functions as complementary to, but unique among, the other non-communication functions required during an emergency or outbreak response, such as, logistics, epidemiology and finances. Communication is uniquely positioned to build knowledge, influence attitudes, raise awareness, build perceptual associations between recommendations and

Climate change is causing unprecedented damage to our ecosystem. Increasing temperatures, ocean warming and acidification, severe droughts, wildfires, altered precipitation patterns, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and amplification of extreme weather events have direct implications for our food systems. While the impacts of such environmental factors on food security are well known, the effects on food safety receive less attention. The purpose of Climate change: Unpacking the burden on food safety is to identify and attempt to quantify some current and anticipated food
