Dear Readers,

In the April 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU), FAO Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific Hiroyuki Konuma urges strong biosecurity and hygiene measures as a first line of defense against the H7N9 avian influenza virus, while praising China's response. Scientists from the United States and China have mapped a key genome of wheat, research that could lead to varieties able to withstand extreme climate conditions.

Global Food Prices rose slightly on soaring dairy prices, but rice prices in the Asia-Pacific region were stable or slightly declined. Exports of basmati rice from India are surging on strong demand from Iran. A bumper wheat crop is expected in Pakistan.
