Dear readers,

The August 2012 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports a sharp rise in food prices of 6 percent driven largely by a 23 percent price rise for coarse grains. Drought in the Russian Federation has damaged wheat crops, while the worst drought in 50 years in the United States has wreaked havoc on its maize harvest.

Flooding in Bangladesh and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has raised humanitarian and food security concerns. Meanwhile, Bhutan has announced plans to become a 100 percent organic farming country.
