Dear Subscribers,
Please see herebelow a link to a twelve minute video of Walter Jehne
discussing the soil carbon sponge produced by Seth Itzkan of Soils4Climate.
The link to more lectures by Water Jehne is also provides herebelow.
Thank you Seth for sharing.

*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to sustainable
agriculture and land management based on the practical application of
locally adapted three interlinked principles of: (i) Continuous no or
minimum mechanical soil disturbance (no-till seeding/planting and weeding,
and minimum soil disturbance with all other farm operations including
harvesting); (ii) permanent maintenance of soil much cover (crop biomass,
stubble and cover crops); and (iii) diversification of cropping system
(environmentally, environmentally and socially adapted rotations and/or
sequences and/or associations involving annuals and perennials, including
legumes and cover crops), along with other complementary good agricultural
production and land management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems
are present in all continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems
including annual cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and
plantation systems, agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, organic
production systems and rice-based systems *(more at: www.fao.org/ag/ca).

Sponge, Climate Solutions and Healthy Water

Hi Amir,
Please also forward to your list this shorter video of Walter Jehne that I
produced. It is only twelve minutes that might be a bit more viewable. It
is available on YouTube and Facebook at the links below, as well as some
highlight quotes.
Thank you,
Seth

Walter Jehne of Healthy Soils Australia discussing #methane and carbon
markets at the Soil Carbon Sponge Seminar in Vermont, organized by Didi
Pershouse. Interviewed by Seth Itzkan of Soil4Climate Inc.,

Note: Walter accidentally said in the first few minutes "20 billion tons of
carbon per annum per hectare." He meant to say "20 billion tons of carbon
per annum (for all land)," and not per hectare.
"It’s water that governs 95% of the heat dynamics of the blue planet, and
it’s really only the water that can now safely cool the planet naturally.
So, now we’re really saying, how do we rebuild that sponge to rebuild the
hydrology to rebuild the natural, safe cooling, because only that can
offset global warming and give us the safe future we need. "
Regarding Cows & Methane:
"The photo-oxidation rate above a healthy green pasture is 100 times the
rate of the methane production of the cows grazing that pasture.
A healthy green pasture transpiring water will result in the production of
these hydroxyl radicals from this photo oxidation more than able to
breakdown all the methane that the cattle grazing it might produce. In
fact, 100 times the rate.
This is the punch line, you see, because grasslands can not exist anywhere
on the planet without their natural symbionts, without their natural
herbivores,
It is the cows managing healthy green pastures that are really the earth’s
only critical means to keep this methane level down.
Methane levels have gone up abnormally in the last decades, largely because
of fugitive emissions from leaking gas wells. And now from fracking,
they’ve gone up three, four fold, but it has nothing to do with cows. It’s
all about these gas, fugitive emissions, but cows have become the very very
simple patsies or scape goats to blame for this effect." - Walter Jehne,
Healthy Soils Australia.
