The California Soil Health Network brings together the diverse agricultural
systems in our state through a producer-led network to share success and
challenges in soil health practices.
California Soil Health Network
Good day, everyone!

It’s been another busy month for the CA Soil Health Network and I had the
pleasure of visiting Contra Costa, Fresno, Humboldt, Tulare, and Sonoma
counties, just to name a few.

Last month I was invited to present at Contra Costa’s Annual Local Working
Group meeting and to participate in their soil health demonstrations. I
talked about the Soil Health Network and the Compost Field Trials and there
was such a great interest in composting! I’m now working with the Contra
Costa RCD to put on a field day focused on compost…thanks for the
hospitality and see you again soon, Contra Costa!
While I was in Eureka heading towards a meeting with the Humboldt County
RCD, I noticed the city has brilliantly recycled readily available material
as bedding in garden beds. The oyster shells added around their trees is
not only a uniquely eye catching addition to their gardens, but a great way
to aid in soil moisture retention. With fall right around the corner, it’s
almost time to travel around the state and do some soil sampling and
compost-spreading for these Compost Field Trials. We just finalized a site
in Sonoma County and two sites in Fresno and Tulare, and I am very excited
to get these trials started. I am also planning a fall cover cropping
demonstration (and possibly more!) for somewhere along the North Coast. If
you’re interested in seeing a cover crop demo or field day in your area,
please let me know!
As always, feel free to give me a ring or shoot me an email if you have
ideas for field days, need help finding resources or information, or if you
just want to talk. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope to chat with you
soon.
Best,
Jeff
