*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. *

This study looked at a 3 year experiment on the short-term effects of
maize-legume intercropping and rotation under CA versus CT for yield and
profitability. CA had 1.4 and 3.2 t/ha more maize yield in the second and
third seasons compared to CT. In the first two seasons CT had 310, 180 and
270 kg/ha more cowpea, soybean and pigeonpea compared to CA. But CA had
more groundnuts that CT in the 2nd and 3rd seasons in two other Districts.
Net returns and land equivalent ratios were also calculated for each
treatment and District.

Weed control is a major issue with CA and although minimal tillage, soil
cover and rotation can reduce weeds, it may take time to become apparent.
This study looked at weed biomass, density and diversity with and without
herbicide in a 19 year long term trial in the highlands of Mexico to
evaluate the impact of the three pillars of CA on weeds. Generally weed
density and biomass were lower in CA compared to CT. The three components
of CA significantly reduced weed biomass that were lower when all three
components were used. When herbicides were applied, weed biomass in CA was
91% lower in maize and 81% lower i wheat compared to CT. They conclude that
if weeds are controlled in initial years, weed populations in CA systems
are lower than CT systems.

This study analyzed 57 in-depth farmer interviews to understand why why
they had limited CA adoption and what would be required to to intensify CA
more. Most farmers reported higher yields with CA but this was related to
input intensification (mainly herbicides) and was constrained by finances.
Farmers identified constraints across their physical, financial, human and
informational resources for low intensities of CA. The authors suggest ways
to overcome this.

This study used the results from 638 farms representing 3 ago-ecological
regions in Mozambique. Net returns and risk were generated for various CA
technologies. The results suggest maize yields were higher for CA systems
compared to CT and also less variable. At higher elevations, direct seeding
was risk-preferred compared to CT. At lower elevations, results were
ambiguous and CT may be better than CA. They conclude that selecting areas
for CA that are known to do well is needed before out-scaling technology
transfer.

This study looks at the effect of tillage and crop rotation (CA vs CT) on
macro-organisms in Zambia on a LT trial. They looked at CT, basins, direct
sowing plus sole cropping, two or three year crop rotations involving
maize, cotton and sunnhemp. The data looked at earthworms, termites, dung
beetles and centipedes. Biota diversity was generally higher in CA compared
to CT treatments. They found that reduced tillage systems and crop
rotations increase biological activity compared to CT systems.

This paper used the applied principles of Transformative Learning and
Communicative action for potential for innovation technologies like CA in
Burkino Faso. In this country CA has not been successfully integrated
beyond the trial scale. The stakeholder mapping showed that dominant
players and traditional ways of communicating are essential for success.

This paper suggests that projected food demand is jeopardized by use of
conventional systems of agriculture that result in environmental
degradation. They describe ways that that existing systems need to be
improved to meet future food security challenges. The contend that the
principles of CA system can provide a framework for a unified approach for

This is a review of CA for smallholder farmers in Bangladesh. It includes
agronomy, weed control, soil properties and GHG emissions. Looks mainly at
multi-crop planter (locally made) attached to a 2W tractor and planting as
strip-till. One pass planting reduces fuel costs by 85%, and labor by 50%.
Also used the machine to transplant rice in a strip without puddling where
rice yield increased up to 12% and therefore gross margins. Also used for
planting lentils, mustard, maize and wheat. Weeds were controlled by using
effective pre- and post-emergent herbicides and the mulch from the leftover
residue from the previous crop.

This interesting and relevant study mentions that herbicide use is
increasing in Africa despite health and environmental risks. They do
improve weed control, save labour and reduce land degradation when CA is
used and they are applied properly. This study surveyed 275 households in
Malawi. They find that CA promotion incentivized herbicide use and reduced
weeding jobs for ganyu (local hired labor) resulting in problems finding

This study compared N2O emissions and crop yield of soybean under NT and CT
using rye and hairy vetch residues from cover crops for 3 years in Italy.
N2O emissions in NT were 40-55% lower compared to CT. NT also increased SOC
content and earthworm abundance. Within NT systems rye had lower N2O
emissions compared to hairy vetch as a consequence of the high C/N ratio of
rye residues.

This study looked at different tillage systems on-farm in three farmer
fields in Malawi. Diverse crop rotations included sweet potato, cassava,
common bean, soybean, cowpea and pigeopea.Th effects on labor use and
financial returns were measured. Over the three years of the study,
continuous NT maize produced the greatest gross and net revenues, despite
having higher production costs. But the diversified cropping systems were
also profitable for farmers because of lower production costs. Farmgate
prices for the various crops was the major factor affecting
profitability.They conclude that policies that reduce input price
volatility and increase farmgate prices of alternative food crops would
have the greatest impact on adoption of other diverse crops.

Weed control is a vital issue in CA systems. Glyphosate use has helped
farmers control weeds, especially when using herbicide tolerant (HT)
genotypes. The recent debate about the safety of Glyphosate and excessive
use of chemical herbicides in food production has caused concern for
farmers should this broad spectrum, easily degradable and environmentally
friendly herbicide be banned. This paper estimates the costs associated
with this prohibition in Spain. They conclude that a ban on Glyphosate
would have a negative impact on the economic profitability of farms and
also on the non-economic advantages derived from adopting CA.

This paper looks at tillage, crop residue and N-management in the
high-slope mountains of Ecuador where high rainfall causes significant soil
erosion. In the initial phase 3 out of the 4 crops NT had the highest
yields. Later, with addition of N fertilizer, yields were higher in 4 out
of 5 crops not fertilized. Leaving the crop residue on the surface
increased the yield of one crop. Higher net returns were found with NT
compared to tillage.
