*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all
continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual
cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems,
agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland
systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation
Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation
Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:

Omaha
World-Herald
Keep living roots in the soil to get more precipitation absorbed. That was
a key takeaway from a University of Nebraska-Lincoln researcher's deep dive
into water retention practices. UNL's Andrea Basche and a research partner
found that planting cover crops and perennials could significantly improve
the ability of soil to soak up heavy rains. And as climate change brings
about increased droughts and heavy rainfall, these practices could help
farmers stabilize their practices. READ MORE

Farmers adopting regenerative agricultural practices across the Midwest are
restoring the health of the soil and of their rural economies. If we
restore soil health and save farmers substantial input costs, we can
restore smaller farms as a means to a secure living and revive the economic
viability of farming communities across small town America. READ MORE

Ohio's
Country Journal
For the last several years, many farmers have been adopting practices to
improve the soil health of their fields. Often this includes no-till or
reduced tillage, and the introduction of cover crops. While the basic soil
health concept is relatively uniform, the way the practices are implemented
is often very different from operation to operation. Every farm and field
is unique, and so is the management approach taken by each farmer. Systems
that manage no-till combined with cover crops have been found to have the
greatest benefit to overall soil health. READ MORE

More than 150 top international scientists are calling on the world to take
urgent action on nitrogen pollution, to tackle the widespread harm it is
causing to humans, wildlife and the planet. The scientists highlight that
"the present environmental crisis is much more than a carbon problem" and
are asking all countries "to wake up to the challenge" of halving nitrogen

A bipartisan group of senators wrote Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue
recently asking for USDA to prioritize the State Acres for Wildlife
Enhancement within the Conservation Reserve Program (SAFE). SAFE was
created to help improve wildlife habitat as part of CRP practices. In
addition to rental payments, under SAFE the department would pay 50% of
costs to pay for eligible permanent cover. READ MORE

State programs and agriculture initiatives are trying to encourage Missouri
farmers to adopt no-till and other practices that reduce fertilizer runoff
that contributes to the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. While many farmers
think such methods are expensive, they're critical to cleaning up the
Mississippi River basin. READ MORE

A sustainable crop code of conduct will help farmers tell the good story of
agriculture in Canada, say members of the Canadian Roundtable for
Sustainable Crops (CRSC). "We need to do a better job of telling (these
stories)," said Cam Dahl, who is president of Cereals Canada and chair of
the steering committee for the roundtable. Questions over the
sustainability of crop production are increasing. The CRSC says a code of
best practices for crop production will help increase public trust in
farmers. READ MORE
