*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. *

Can you send this out to people who get your list serve material? The hard
copy is below. Many thanks for helping to distribute this.

The Cornell University Conservation Agriculture web page htttp://
soilhealth.org is worth exploring since it contains many CA materials. It
has almost 2000 CA articles you can search using the link

This study used 16S rRNA sequencing to analyze the assembly and composition
of the rhizosphere bacterial communities of wheat at different growth
stages tillage practices. The results show significant changes. The
bacterial communities under ZT appear to be more stable compared to plough
tillage treatment probably related to less soil disturbance.

insight:
This study looked at 4 residue levels and 5 potassium levels on ZT
maize-wheat in India on station. Residue and potassium both increased crop
yield and soil quality. The maximum effect on crop growth came with 4-6
Mg/ha of crop residue (CR). Soil quality measures of bulk density, pH, EC,
and available micronutrients were the same for the CR and K treatments.
They recommend that CR retention combined with 50% recommended K were
needed for crop growth and soil health.

This 5 year study looked at the effect of CA on energy budget, water
productivity and profitability in rice-wheat (RW) and maize-wheat (MW)
based systems of the IGP of India. CA based RW and MW systems enhanced crop
productivity by 10 and 16%, water productivity by 56 and 33% and
profitability by 38 and 32% compared to their respective CT systems. CA
based systems also recorded the highest net energy and energy-intensiveness
levels of 251 and 300% compared to the respective CT systems.

This study looks at the effect of no-tillage on hybrid rice in terms of
yield and nitrogen requirement in China over a 10 year period. An
interesting conclusion showed no difference in in yield, yield attributes

and N-use efficiency can be achieved with hybrid rice by transplanting a
single seedling with or without tillage.

no-tillage on the population of arbuscular mycorrhiza and nematodes. Three
areas with no-tillage after 7, 11 and 14 years were compared with areas not
impacted by agriculture. The results showed either a slightly reduced,
slightly improved or maintained the functional diversity of arbuscular
mycorrhiza and nematodes after 14 years of cultivation. However, cultivated
areas reduced the mycorrirhiza fungi and increased plant parasitic
nematodes.

insight:
This study investigated C-sequestration potential of CA in Zimbabwe. They
used micrometeorological methods to measure CO2 flux from several
alternative CA practices. Their results show CA practices produce less CO2
emissions. Overall, CA practices of no-till with use of cover crops
produced less CO2 emissions than CT and fallow.

insight:
This paper is a global meta-analysis looking at the effect of CA on soil
microbial population size. Both NT and NT plus residue (NTS) increased
microbial count compared to CT. Bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes were 3,
18 and 28% higher under NTS than NT and 38, 41, and 28% higher than CTS (CT
plus residue). They conclude that response to minimal tillage and residue
retention was consistently positive for soil microbial count.

insight:
Smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa fail to adopt all three CA
principles because of lack of weed management methods (tillage),
crop-livestock interactions (residue is an animal feed) and poorly
developed markets for other diversified crops. Farmers do incorporate 1 or
2 principles but not all three. This study looked at these three principles
to see what ones are most important for high yield with and without
fertilizer. The results show that the order of importance for the three
principles were mulch, reduced tillage and then rotation. The combined
effect of all three on maize yields were higher than for CT and any two of
the other principles together suggesting that all three give the highest
yields.

This paper looks at a farm using CA principles for 30 years to look at
carbon sequestration. They used Century and Roth-C models to simulate the
carbon stocks. Their data show that SOC continuously increased after CA
practices from 1985 to 2015 and now is in equilibrium. Yields also
increased with time with maize increasing more than wheat or soybeans. The
paper presents data on the quantity of soil organic carbon increase over a
60 year period.

soil organic carbon, monoculture versus crop rotation and minimum tillage
versus plowing on wheat yield in Switzerland. Wheat yield was 16% higher in

tillage had 7% higher SOC than the plough treatment. Rotation had no effect
on SOC.

This study looked at GHG emissions from monsoon rice grown on puddled
versus non-puddled soils, with and without residue retention in Bangladesh.
A cradle to farm-gate Life Cycle analysis was used to calculate GHG
emissions. The GHG emissions with non-puddling and low residue retention
were 31% lower than puddling and crop residue retention. Non-puddled with
residue retention had 16% GHG emissions compared to the puddled treatment.
CH4 was the main GHG comprising 63-67% of the GHS's. But non-puddling with
residue retention gave the highest rice yield.
