*for sustainable agriculture and land management*

Dear Subscribers,

Please see herebelow an announcement from Didi Pershouse about the webinar
with Dr. Elaine Ingham on September 25th. In this webinar with
world-renowned Soil Biologist Dr. Ingham, we will discuss the soil food
web, and explore all the roles and functions that soil organisms perform in
a landscape.

Apologies for any cross-posting.

*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all
continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual
cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems,
agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland
systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation
Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation
Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:
http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture).

*Hello wonderful people,*
I have some exciting news to share: a live webinar with Dr. Elaine Ingham
next week, on September 25th, and an in-person event (with me!) tomorrow
(Friday, September 20th) right here in Thetford, Vermont.
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=dc46c04b24&e=7906f4d8e3>
In this webinar with world-renowned Soil Biologist Dr. Elaine Ingham, we
will discuss the soil food web, and explore all the roles and functions
that soil organisms perform in a landscape. If you join us live, you will
have a chance to join in the discussion and questions and answers via the
chat window.

Why do most people portray microbes as deadly disease-causers, when in fact
most microbes don't cause disease? From assessing microbes in the digestive
systems of oysters to understanding the interplay of microbes in the soil,
Dr. Ingham has shown that the soil food web increases plant production and
nutrition, reduces water use, builds soil structure, and increases nutrient
cycling--creating better food for all of life.

*Dr. Ingham teaches that there is no soil that lacks nutrients to grow
plants--rather, many soils lack the proper sets of microorganisms to
convert nutrients in soil into a form that plants can use (not unlike our
own microbiomes in our guts.) *
Dr. Ingham has shown that much of modern agriculture has been extremely
destructive of soil, and as a consequence, we are consuming sick, unhealthy
plants. It is critical to understand the role and function of bacteria,
fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms, and arthropods in ensuring that
food resources contain the nutrients we need, without destroying natural
systems.

She will use successful case studies to show that we do not need inorganic
fertilizers, pesticides or tillage to grow healthy plants, and healthy,
productive ecosystems.

*This webinar is offered on a sliding scale, and will occur on Wednesday,
September 25th, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM Eastern Time Zone (New York, USA).*

*Climate Change and Life Itself: A Hopeful New Perspective*
A brief report from the front lines of ecosystems, and a community
conversation about where to go next.
Facilitated by Didi Pershouse

Friday September 20th at 3 pm
First Congregational Church of Thetford
Route 113, Thetford, Vermont
Newcomb Room
Join me for a rich community conversation exploring the role that
ecosystems play in regulating regional weather systems and the global
climate--and our own potential role in collaborating with other species to
restore the climate we want. You will come away with a new understanding of
the life-giving work that other species do to regulate temperatures, cloud
formation, rainfall, flooding, CO2, and more.

Please bring your worries, hopes, questions, thoughts, and views of the
future as we explore this new landscape of understanding and the many
possibilities for action it creates.
Farmers, ranchers, and other land managers from around the world are
showing us that simple changes in land management can help cool the
climate, prevent flooding, and provide community resilience during extreme
weather events.

This offers a new choice for all of us--to change the history of the
planet--and an opportunity for us to use our minds, hands and hearts in
service to life itself.

Warmly,
*Didi*
