*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and perennials, including legumes and cover crops), along
with other complementary good agricultural production and land management
practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all continents,
involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual cropland systems,
perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems, agroforestry systems,
crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland systems, organic production
systems and rice-based systems. Conservation Tillage and Minimum Tillage
are not Conservation Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:
www.fao.org/ag/ca).

Global Symposium on Soil Erosion (GSER19)
<http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/soil-erosion-symposium/en/>
The Global Symposium on Soil Erosion (GSER19) will be a high level
science-policy meeting, held from *15 – 17 May 2019*, at FAO HQ in Rome,
Italy. This Symposium is jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), the
Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS), the United Nations
Convention to Combat Desertification Science (UNCCD-SPI) and the Joint
FAO/IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency division for Nuclear Techniques
in Food and Agriculture. Starting from the latest scientific knowledge on
the status of interventions and innovations related to soil erosion
management and existing assessment frameworks, the Symposium will address
soil erosion prevention and control for increased food security and
ecosystem services. The call for abstracts is open.

Combating desertification in the EU: a growing threat in need of more action
<https://www.eca.europa.eu/Lists/ECADocuments/SR18_33/SR_DESERTIFICATION_EN.pdf>
Desertification is a form of land degradation in drylands and it is a
growing threat in the EU. Its effects will be particularly acute in
Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania. The European
Court of Auditors report found that the risk of desertification in the EU
was not being effectively and efficiently addressed. While desertification
and land degradation are growing threats, the steps taken to combat
desertification lack coherence. The report recommends to the Commission to
better aim at understanding land degradation and desertification in the
EU; assessing the need to enhance the EU legal framework for soil; and
stepping up efforts towards delivering the commitment made by the EU and
the Member States to achieve land degradation neutrality in the EU by 2030.

<https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/content/lucas-2009-topsoil-data>* (complete
database)*
ESDAC makes available the full package of LUCAS dataset (since recently
included a shape file for non-expert users). The full package includes the
19969 points in EU-23, the 2034 points from Romania and Bulgaria (LUCAS
2012) and the 65 points from Iceland, and spectral data for all soil
samples. The LUCAS 2015 data are expected to be released in summer 2019.

EUROSOIL 2020—Call for sessions <https://eurosoil2020.com/callforsessions/>
The Eurosoil 2020 Organizing Committee invites proposals for Scientific
Sessions. In line with the Eurosoil 2020 theme “Connecting People and
Soil”, organisers expect sessions and workshops addressing the
soil-related topics of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the
United Nations. The Eurosoil 2020 program will be structured around
selected SDGs. The real challenge is to stimulate the involvement of other
scientific disciplines and stakeholders.
