*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. *

insight:
Pest control is a critical practice in crop production and promoting
biological control is desirable. This study collected arthropod species
diversity data from a 4 year trial in Zambia comparing CA with conventional
practices (CP) specifically looking at beneficial and detrimental
arthropods. Higher diversity was observed in CA systems compared to CP
except in a low rainfall year where CP had no rotation (CP-M). More
beneficial and detrimental arthropods were recorded in a CA system with a
3-year rotation of maize, cotton and sunnhemp. The CP-M treatment recorded
the highest detrimental arthropods. Reduced soil disturbance, crop residue
and crop diversity in CA plots attracted beneficial arthropods and so is
suggested is better for biological control.

The Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia suffer from reduced farm
profitability, degraded natural resources and energy deficits with
conventional farm practices. Burning of rice crop residues is also an air
pollution problem. A five year study concluded that crop residue biomass
contributed the most (79%) in total input energy (renewable) in CA based
systems whereas fertilizer application contributed the most (50%) to total
energy (non-renewable) in conventional systems maize-wheat systems.

Direct seeded rice is a possible replacement for the water, labor and
energy intensive transplanted rice if weeds can be controlled. This study
looked at integrated weed control that included rice under puddled and
unpuddled conditions, NT with direct seeded rice with or without residue
retention and cover crops, NT transplanted rice and combinations of
herbicides with and without cover crops. In the first year NTDSR with or
without residue had more weeds compared to puddled transplanted treatments.
In the 2nd year weeds were the same and in the 3rd year weeds were less in
the NTDSR treatments. Plots under NTDSR yielded the same or more then the
PTPR treatments. Herbicides were effective in controlling specific weeds
and the study recommended two herbicides in combination for control of
weeds in DSR.

insight:
Soil degradation by soil organic carbon loss is a major concern in SSA.
This study assesses the long-term (13 years) changes in SOC, aggregate
associated C, particulate organic C (POC) and infiltration in sub-tropical,
monocropping maize at 3 soil depths in South Africa. Tillage treatments
were No-till (NT) and rotational tillage (RT) both with permanent residue
cover and CT with residue removed. Nitrogen treatments were 0, 100 and 200
kg/ha. On average Total SOC did not differ between tillage treatments, but
varied with depth where it was stratified in the 0-10 cm depth in NT and
RT. POC varied and decreased significantly in the 0-10 cm depth with
increased tillage intensity. They conclude that reduced soil disturbance
improves physical protection of SOC, soil structure and infiltration but
TSOC takes time to improve.

Sustainable Development Goals require climate Smart and profitable farm
innovations. This study looks at CA as a sustainable intensification
strategy in the context of smallholder farming in South Asia. This
meta-analysis used 9,686 paired site-year comparisons representing
different indicators of cropping system performance. The results show
significant benefits when CA component practices are implemented either
separately or in tandem. They suggest that there are opportunities to
maximize expected benefits and policymakers and development practitioners
should be appraised of the potential for CA in South Asia.

insight:
This study suggests CA can be widely promoted to overcome SSA climate
change and food security issues but suggest little is known about the
impact of CA on soil physical properties such as soil structure and
hydraulic properties. The aim of this report was to assess the impact of
10-12 years of maize-based CA on soil physical properties with CA and
conventional tillage treatments in Malawi. The results show that CA systems
have significant changes to soil hydraulic properties that correlate with
improved soil structure. There was no significant build-up of organic
matter in CA systems but residues were not included. They conclude that CA
should include residues to enhance soil OM levels.

insight:
This study looks at ways to overcome the scarcity of water and dropping
water table in the rice-wheat areas of NW India. It also looked at ways to
overcome the air pollution problem associated with rice residue burning
after harvest and excessive tillage. This study looked at residue mulch, ,
different spacing and depths for sub-surface drip lines and fertigation
(SSDF) on permanent bed planting on yield, water productivity nitrogen
efficiency and net returns. There were water savings with the buried drip
lines in both rice and wheat. Residue mulch resulted in higher water
savings, wheat yield, water productivity compared to no residues. Net
returns were higher for buried 15cm deep drip lines compared to flood
irrigation.

insight:
This study looked at conventional (CT) and No-till (NT) in wheat/maize
following puddled or non-puddled TP rice or direct seeded rice. Also
residue removal or retention. They looked at soil aggregation, carbon
pools, nutrient availability and yield. After 6 years in top 20 cm soil, NT
treatments had had more total organic carbon than CT treatments. NT
treatments also had more stable soil aggregates. Retention of residues
increased TOC, and soil available nutrients, especially P, K and Zinc over
residue removal. The conclude that NT with residue retention should be
recommended for improving soil quality and production sustainability.

insight:
NW India is suffering from over exploitation of ground water because of the
traditional flood irrigation for rice and also low nitrogen-use efficiency.
Maize-based systems are being promoted that use less water. Bed planting,
straw mulching and drip irrigation also use less water. This 2-year study
looked at permanent bed planting, surface drip irrigation, residue
management and N-rate on crop and water productivity. Both wheat and maize
under drip irrigation with residue retention showed 23 and 14% higher
yields compared to furrow irrigation with no residue retention. This drip
system with residues also saves water and increases water productivity in
both maize and wheat crops compared to furrow irrigation. Fertigation in
the drip lines with split applications increased N-use efficiency.

insight:
This study in the Northern China Plain looked at 11 years of of six
agricultural practices on soil organic carbon storage, crop yield and yield
stability in a maize-wheat system. The three tillage systems were
conventional (CT), No-till (NT) and sub-soiling (ST) with straw returned or
removed. The highest SOC was in NT and ST with residue. Highest yields were
with ST with and without straw return. NT, ST and straw return both
increased crop yield stability. Maize and wheat yields were positively
correlated with SOC storage.
