*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all
continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual
cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems,
agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland
systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation
Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation
Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:
http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture).

Didi Pershouse*
*Author • Soil Sponge Strategist • Educator*
*Founder of the Land & Leadership Initiative*
Author of *The Ecology of Care* and
*Understanding Soil Health and Watershed Function*
Hello all you wonderful people,
I recently performed a whirlwind visual introduction to the work of the
soil sponge as a panelist on the "Ecosystem Restoration for Climate"
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=2de49f7bd5&e=7906f4d8e3>
panel
at the Global Earth Repair Initiative's annual conference.
On that panel, I discussed *the incredible potential that the soil sponge
holds to restore ecological and economic sanity to our world.* The
conversation included many of my amazing colleagues from around the world.
The video of that conversation is available to view here
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=b934eea79e&e=7906f4d8e3>
.
I'm also looking forward to the upcoming courses and webinars that I'll be
teaching and hosting in the coming weeks. I hope you'll join me for at
least one of them!
*Next Soil Sponge 4-Week Intensive Course Starting Soon*
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=afe9d120a9&e=7906f4d8e3>
*Place yourself at the forefront of 21st-century systems thinking by
learning how simple changes in land management can address society's most
urgent challenges.*
Beginning on Wednesday, May 29th, I'll be offering my popular intensive
course entitled "Regenerating the Soil Carbon Sponge for Flood, Drought,
and Wildfire Resilience
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=33e5d1a4bd&e=7906f4d8e3>."
The class meets for four, two-hour sessions and costs $275.
*The soil carbon sponge is the basic infrastructure that supports life on
land. *Humans can't build it. Technology can't build it. Only plants,
fungi, microbes, animals, and insects can build this infrastructure. We can
learn how to support them in that work by creating the right working
conditions. This course will introduce you to these biological workers, the
structures they create underground, the incredible value of their work in
your life, and how to be an ally to them in your land management.
You will also join our incredible community of people (farmers, educators,
policy folks, and more) from around the world, and engage in deep
discussions together as you learn new concepts, both in the course and in
our ongoing Google group.
*Can't afford the full price of the course?*
Please contact me
<[log in to unmask]>if
you need financial assistance and let me know what makes sense for you to
pay.
*Want to support someone who'd like to take the class but can't afford it? *
Choose the "Course + $100 donation" payment option to contribute towards
someone else's enrollment. Or if you'd like to make a larger donation, you
can contact me directly
<[log in to unmask]>. My goal is to
make sure everyone who wants to participate, can participate. We are
shifting to a new economic model for the second two courses, offered below.
Sign me up for the four-week course.

*Single Day Soil Sponge Intensive*
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=f37398fbdf&e=7906f4d8e3>
On Thursday, June 6th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (New
York, USA), I'll be offering a *single-day 4-hour intensive for those
looking to gain a solid introduction to the soil sponge and soil health
principles. *Similar to the four-week intensive, but with shortened
in-class material, this course offers a strong grounding in understanding
the structure and function of the soil sponge. There will be less
discussion and more focus on explaining core principles, though the course
will still be lively and interactive.
If you cannot attend this course on June 6th, you can still enroll and
simply watch the recording of the course later.
The mini-course sounds just right for me.

*Live (Advanced Level) Q&A Webinar with Australian Soil Microbiologist and
Climate Scientist Walter Jehne*

I am thrilled to announce that I will be hosting a* live Q&A webinar with
renowned Australian soil microbiologist and climate scientist Walter Jehne*
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=b7410a40ca&e=7906f4d8e3>
.
We will answer questions about the biology and physics of restoring water
cycles for cooling and rehydration of landscapes at local, regional, and
global scales, as well as questions about the soil sponge that underlies
all healthy functional landscapes and water cycles.
We will be recording live and taking questions from attendees on a Zoom
webinar this coming Sunday night May 26th from 7 pm to 9 pm. (Remember,
Aussies, for you it's actually happening early Monday morning...)
You can sign up to watch it live

or watch the recording later if that time doesn't work for you.
Walter and I did a massive 18-event speaking tour together across the USA
last spring, including 5 events that kicked off our "Can We Rehydrate
California?" initiative

and our annual intensive seminar here in Vermont. (Stay tuned for the next
one coming up in August). We have both been invited to India this fall to
bring our work to the UN-FAO Farmer Field School program and policy makers.
*PLEASE NOTE:* *This live webinar is aimed at folks who have already
watched a video of Walter speaking, attended a soil sponge event of mine or
Walter's, and/or who have taken an introductory soil sponge course with
me. *
*Though all are welcome to sign up, you will get more out of this webinar
if you watch one or both of the below videos first.*
