*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all
continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual
cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems,
agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland
systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation
Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation
Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:
http://www.fao.org/conservation-agriculture).

*Hello wonderful people,*
I hope you will join me this week as I interview two leaders that are doing
essential work in the world--with huge implications for land, water,
weather systems, biodiversity, and human societies. You can register to
join the live webinars and pose questions and comments for the guests as
the conversation unfolds, and/or to gain access to the recordings
afterwards. Read on for more details.
*Live Q & A Webinar with soil microbiologist and climate scientist Walter
Jehne, June 12th*
<https://didipershouse.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6075151f49894b2c63289a22a&id=0f7c80b774&e=7906f4d8e3>I
met Walter Jehne in 2015 when he and I were both presenting at a conference
on water and climate at Tufts University. It was his first trip to the US
(from Australia), and he and his colleague Tom wanted to see New
England--so I offered to bring them up to my house in Vermont, warning them
that it was small and messy, but that the rivers, ponds, fields and forests
were gorgeous. Walter said "don't worry, I don't take up much space, I
spend all my time out in the bush, and I don't care what your house looks
like." True to his word, Walter slept on the floor, and jumped up to make
tea as soon as I came downstairs in the morning.

Walter is constantly brimming with ideas and information, so I turned on my
tape recorder as soon as we got in the car, and collected all the paper
napkins he drew diagrams on, as we were talking. I interwove those ideas
with the ones I was already writing about, and working on, and that was the
beginning of one of several treasured working friendships in my life.

We embarked on a "Can We Rehydrate California?" speaking tour last spring
that had us meeting people in suits in conference rooms overlooking Trump
tower, peering into soil pits at Gail Fuller's farm in Kansas, and
wandering through newly scorched forests in California, (along with another
treasured colleague, Peter Donovan.)

In this second Q & A with Walter, we will answer questions about the *Soil
Carbon Sponge, focusing on its Structure, Function, and Formation.*

*This webinar will occur on June 12, 2019, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern
Time Zone (New York, USA).*
I'd like to sign up for the webinar.

We will also follow up on questions from our first webinar about *restoring
water cycles for cooling and rehydration of landscapes at a local,
regional, and global scale*. *That first webinar is now available on
demand.*

*Live Webinar #2: How a state in India got half a million farmers to adopt
Zero Budget Natural Farming.*

June 13th, I will doing a live interview webinar with Mr. Vijay Kumar.
During his 36 years of government service, he has spent about 25 years
focused on large-scale community mobilization of tribal communities, and
rural women and farmers.

For the past four years, he has been leading the Climate Resilient Zero
Budget Natural Farming Initiative in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India,
engaging half a million farmers. He expects a million farmers to adopt
ZBNF by the end of the year, and by 2024, his vision is to have all 6
million farmers in the state doing ZBNF, to make the whole state a natural
farming state.

His project is in conjunction with the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization's Farmer Field School. It has a strong focus on
farmer-to-farmer teaching and research, empowering smallholder farmers
(primarily women) to use agroecology to increase production, improve soil
health, improve the soil sponge, and eliminate the need for any commercial
inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, etc.), thereby providing
freedom from the dependencies on corporations and a path out of the despair
that has led to a wave of farmer suicides in India.

I met Mr. Kumar because the UN-FAO Farmer Field School program invited me
to work with farmers and trainers with the ZBNF initiative in Andhra
Pradesh this fall, to help them develop creative communication strategies
about the soil sponge and its role in climate resilience and cooling. Our
starting point will be my *Understanding Soil Health and Watershed Function*

I am excited to be working with him, and am looking forward to hearing more
of his story. He is a leader who understands the issues of grassroots
organizing first hand.

later.

*A quick note about the pricing of my webinars:*

I want to make sure that every person who wants to learn about these topics
is able to access these webinars--and I want to make sure that I can keep
doing this work. That's why the pricing is on a sliding scale. If you can
afford to pay a little extra, that means I can offer financial assistance
to someone in India, Zimbabwe, Mexico, or Texas. Thank you for supporting
my work and for helping me to make this learning open to all who are
interested. If you can't afford the bottom of the sliding scale, or if you
would like to make a larger donation towards this initiative, please contact
me.
