Dear Subscribers,
Please see herebelow a response from Bob Boddey of Embrapa to Frank
Lessiter's statement in No-Till Insider of 22 February that:
"Over the past 38 years, we've produced a handful of *No-Till Farmer* articles
on no-tilling corn and other crops into a living cover, such as alfalfa
sod, cereal rye or wheat. But it’s a tricky maneuver and one that has not
caught on among many no-tillers".

Dear Amir,
I hope this finds you well.
I see that Frank Lessiter say "Over the past 38 years, we've produced a
handful of *No-Till Farmer* articles on no-tilling corn and other crops
into a living cover, such as alfalfa sod, cereal rye or wheat. But it’s a
tricky maneuver and one that has not caught on among many no-tillers".
Well it is common practice in tropical Brazil. The farmers go from
Brachiaria pasture to soybean and such, just by spraying down the grass and
direct drill. The grasses have very dense root systems and a great deal of
organic matter stays in the soil. When they go back to Brachiaria the grass
grows madly from the residual nutrient applied as fertilizer to the
soybean. Hence, crop/pasture integration is just great for both crops and
pasture, and can secure or even increase SOM levels.
See our paper Sant’Anna et al (2017) attached.
My very best wishes
Bob

Designing The "Perfect" No-Till Corn Hybrid

When it comes to selecting the critical traits found with hybrids which
perform best under various tillage systems, farmers attending the 1998
National No-Tillage Conference in Indianapolis, Ind., cited significant

Evaluating Herbicide Carryover on Cover Crops

To get a sense of which herbicides can be used before a specific cover crop
species and which can’t, Purdue University weed scientist Bryan Young
compiled research from the University of Wisconsin, Purdue University,
University of Missouri and Penn State University, as well as commercial
research conducted by retired University of Illinois Extension agronomist
Mike Plumer.
