*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all
continents, involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual
cropland systems, perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems,
agroforestry systems, crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland
systems, organic production systems and rice-based systems. Conservation
Tillage, Reduced Tillage and Minimum Tillage are not Conservation
Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own* (more at:

insight:
This is an integrative study that assesses the overall impact of CA on soil
health. It used Biofunctool®, a set of in-field indicators, to monitor
changes in soil biological functioning. Biofunctool® was used to assess the
impact of a conventional tillage (CT) and three CA annual-based cropping
systems on soil health on a Cambodian Oxisol. Eight indicators related to
the three soil functions were monitored and integrated into a Soil Quality
index (SQI), i.e. the Biofunctool® Index. An analysis of soil carbon
dynamics showed that CA supports short-term soil organic carbon
stabilization compared to CT. This study demonstrates that Biofunctool® is
a robust, relevant, time-and cost-effective in-field assessment tool that
can be used in multiple ways including cropping system management, capacity
building of local stakeholders, and policy dialogue.

insight:
This paper looks at the effect of three different tillage practices on soil
chemical properties and fertility using 3 fertilizer levels and maize yield
in a semi-arid region of South Africa. The experiment was evaluated 13
years after inception. The results indicated that SOC takes time to
improve in conservation agricultural practices in a semi-arid environment
and its increase is only confined to the soil surface. This increase in the
soil surface is also associated with increased availability of the soil
important nutrients.

This is an interesting review paper that looks at biochar as a key and
accessible input for sustainable agriculture, that could efficiently
sequester large amounts of carbon in soil over the long-run, thus improving
soil fertility, crop productivity, and mitigate global warming. The aim of
this review was to provide a sound scientific basis for policy development,
to identify gaps in current knowledge, and to recommend further research
relating to biochar application to soils.

insight:
This is an interesting paper on the effect of burning rice straw on
microbial dynamics in the RW system of India. Disposal of rice straw by
burning is a favorite practice of farmers to clear the land for the next
wheat crop but is a major health issue in NW India through air pollution.
But it also leads to the loss of soil organic matter and essential
nutrients, reduces microbial activities and the land more vulnerable to
soil erosion. This paper looks at the impact of burning on microbial
populations and and enzyme activities involved in biomass recycling.

volume is: Summarises current research on optimising CA system practices
and their ecological, economic and social benefits. Elaborates on how CA
systems make efficient use of production inputs such as water, nutrients,
energy and addresses challenges in such areas as weed, insect pest and
disease management. Reviews the central issues of improvement in yield,
profitability and ecosystem services as well as climate change adaptability

insight:
This study evaluated the performance of rainy season maize during 2014
under an ongoing long-term trial (established in 2008) with three tillage
practices, i.e., permanent bed (PB), zero tillage (ZT), and conventional
tillage (CT) as main plots, and four intensified maize-based cropping
systems, i.e., maize-wheat-mungbean, maize-chickpea-Sesbania (MCS),
maize-mustard-mungbean, and maize-maize-Sesbania) as subplot treatments. In
the seventh rainy season of the experiment, maize growth parameters, yield
attributes, yield, and water- and energy-use efficiency were highest at
fixed plots under ZT. Overall, the results showed that CA-based ZT and PB
practices coupled with diversified maize-based cropping systems effectively
enhanced maize yield and SOC, as well as water- and energy-use efficiency,
in northwestern India.

This paper feels that the potential of CA to soil organic carbon
sequestration in deep layers and aggregates are less known and so this
study aims to study the long term effects (9 years) of contrasting tillage
treatments and residue addition on soil aggregation. and sequestration at
different soil depths. They conclude that ZT in combination with crop
residue retention has great potential in enhancing deep soil C
sequestration and C stability of soil aggregates to sustain soil health and

insight:
This is a comment on a paper published by Gonzalez-Sanchez et al. in 2019
that conclude that CA in Africa can effectively contribute to mitigation of
global warming through SOC sequestration. However, the authors of this
comment argue that the mitigation calculations and interpretations by
Gonzalez-Sanchez et al. (2019) are flawed and biased.

This is the first volume of this book with 12 chapters and 602 pages
contributed by the the many CA experts on a multitude of subjects. The Key
features: Reviews the development of CA systems globally and elaborates on
science underlying the key CA system components. Assesses the latest
evidence on improving soil and crop health and CA system resilience through
the application of the core CA system principles. Includes case studies
reviewing current science on optimising CA cropping systems involving
cereal, legume, horticultural and tree crops as well as integrating
livestock in CA systems.
