*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil much cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops); and
(iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally and
socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations involving
annuals and perennials, including legumes and cover crops), along with
other complementary good agricultural production and land management
practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all continents,
involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual cropland systems,
perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems, agroforestry systems,
crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland systems, organic production
systems and rice-based systems *(more at: www.fao.org/ag/ca).

Greetings Colleagues,
Please find below an announcement about an exciting opportunity for
agricultural educators and Conservation Agriculture practitioners:
The Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) is a unique and
innovative English language undergraduate institution dedicated to
preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders of Rwanda and East
Africa. RICA is committed to experiential and cohort learning. Students
will be responsible for cooperatively managing one of four student farms on
campus. There are also six Agricultural Enterprises housed on-campus that
students will engage with during their time at RICA: Beef Cattle & Small
Ruminants, Dairy, Poultry & Swine, Row & Forage Crops, Vegetable & Tree
Crops, and Irrigation & Mechanization. Conservation Agriculture,
Communication, One Health, and Entrepreneurship are themes woven throughout
all curriculum. Students will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in
Conservation Agriculture after three years. Graduates will be innovative
problem solvers able to operate farms and ranches, start agribusinesses,
assume management roles in cooperatives, NGOs, and other agricultural
enterprises, serve their communities as extension agents and serve as
technical and policy experts. All students accepted to RICA will receive
full scholarships for education and living expenses made possible through
public-private partnerships.
In preparation for the first class of students arriving on campus July
2019, we are currently seeking qualified candidates to fill 25 academic
staff positions. Candidates must have an MS or PhD in their respective

Applications will remain open until qualified candidates are identified. We
look forward to receiving many applications in the coming weeks and months.
