Subject: Following the Dasgupta Review on Economics of Biodiversity
To: bioplan <[log in to unmask]>

Dear BIOPLANNERS,

My life seems to be filled with the Dasgupta Review on the Economics of
Biodiversity these lockdown days.

Following the release of the Interim Report
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gov.uk%2Fgovernment%2Fpublications%2Finterim-report-the-dasgupta-review-independent-review-on-the-economics-of-biodiversity&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469063667&sdata=RThzwXI5TmVn88dhV8UCne1viYf6bNwzRQfrclZbjfk%3D&reserved=0>,
Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta made an online presentation with Q&As at the
London School of Economics that was viewed by over 1000 persons. The 54
minute presentation can still be viewed here
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lse.ac.uk%2Flse-player%3Fid%3D4879&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469073664&sdata=0pVe4FkDbO6Skw1eqsd9QgTonZTROUNXGmNmG7oqwPs%3D&reserved=0>
and the four Powerpoint slides can be downloaded as a PDF here
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lse.ac.uk%2FEvents%2FEvents-Assets%2FPDF%2F2020%2F02-ST%2F20200507-Economics-of-Biodiversity.pdf&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469073664&sdata=zZ%2BjLQqsOkjeZBhojtQYOlr6rDchsN3JBpM50rrrzHs%3D&reserved=0>.
Over 130 questions were asked, but not all addressed but the full list can
be viewed here
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dropbox.com%2Fscl%2Ffi%2Fkehnd8wl7w51as1h51q5q%2FDasgupta-Video-Questions.docx%3Fdl%3D0%26rlkey%3Dtdgbdb9uungvisf7l5fmmnyjr&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469083657&sdata=6HhBL0SsRJS8OInhOFxkuak2OQ4CXKBOm4ecBNuukUU%3D&reserved=0>.
 The 19 pages of questions are worth viewing in part to see the wide
geographical range of viewers globally, and also to see that viewers appear
to have been expecting more on solutions, which hopefully will come with
the final report.

A second live online briefing webinar was convened by member of the review
team on 12th May but has not been made available yet and the (few)
questions asked can be viewed here
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dropbox.com%2Fscl%2Ffi%2Fk3skylkrmvmc2vwkqsx7k%2FDasgupta-webinar-2-Qs.docx%3Fdl%3D0%26rlkey%3D2ayeliz5onqt7c9mgsaejo0t2&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469083657&sdata=GrTlG%2BMaPb1cOrH0V3DzFKZV9fbgC3yCoNOBJfyVC%2F4%3D&reserved=0>.
The last “question” was an interesting link to the Anglia Ruskin University
webpages on “Debating Nature’s Value”
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Faru.ac.uk%2Fglobal-sustainability-institute-gsi%2Fresearch%2Fecosystems-and-human-wellbeing%2Fdebating-natures-value&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469093650&sdata=xNBAcvc5oWgjharK8RDOg6bfdXqv%2FYQiDXqXcNfklY8%3D&reserved=0>
– a very useful set or resources have been compiled on the website.

A second briefing is being held on 20th May and it is still possible to
register for the event by sending an email request, and any questions, to
[log in to unmask] . I am not sure if this is a repeat of
the first briefing to make it easier for different times zones to
participate.

A one page editorial on the importance of the Review has appeared Nature
journal and can be accessed (free) here
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fd41586-020-01390-w&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469093650&sdata=jl2%2FHN5OlHhoLQBmqBLk6FJGQOs38VCzz%2FbZHoaMrFo%3D&reserved=0>.
The editorial quotes Sir Dasgupta as saying, in a 2008 op-ed
<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Ftwas08.44a&data=02%7C01%7Cbioplan%40groups.undp.org%7C4f05e92add0a4bf60b2e08d7f82d3b85%7Cb3e5db5e2944483799f57488ace54319%7C0%7C1%7C637250745469103642&sdata=xIAl38o4xl%2BTaqTw2%2BuErTuTnHsB6X1A8%2F0134IA1Bg%3D&reserved=0>
in the same journal: “*It is only a matter of time before economics makes
room for nature*,” which reminded me that I wrote an article titled: “How
to grow a green economy” for New Scientist magazine in 1990. Time marches
on, but hopefully our current situation will help rather than hinder the
realisation of the necessary transformations.

Best wishes and stay safe.

David Duthie
