Subject: Lessons Learnt from International Environmental Agreements:
Celebrating 20 years of International Environmental Agreements (INEA)
To: bioplan <[log in to unmask]>

Dear BIOPLANNERS,

When it first appeared as part of the UNDP/UNEP/GEF Biodiversity Planning
Support Programme over 20 years ago, the focus was on assisting developing
countries to meet their obligations under the Convention on Biodiversity
and other international environmental agreements. BIOPLAN has “drifted” a
bit since then, so I jumped at a chance to provide a post closer to the
original remit.

The journal International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and
Economics is also 20 years old this year and has devoted a free/open access
special issue to “lessons learned”.

The 10 articles cover a broad range of environmental agreements, somewhat
academically, but provide a useful guide to the challenges and pitfalls of
international environmental agreements.

At a minimum, I would recommend reading the opening editorial, which
summarises the other articles, plus the Peterssen & Stoett article on the
global biodiversity governance.

As we move towards Nairobi and the final CoP15 in Kunming, China, we
certainly need to learn from the past we attempt to craft a post-2020
framework that has a chance of “bending the curve”.

Best wishes

David Duthie
