*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and perennials, including legumes and cover crops), along
with other complementary good agricultural production and land management
practices. Conservation Agriculture systems are present in all continents,
involving rainfed and irrigated systems including annual cropland systems,
perennial systems, orchards and plantation systems, agroforestry systems,
crop-livestock systems, pasture and rangeland systems, organic production
systems and rice-based systems. Conservation Tillage and Minimum Tillage
are not Conservation Agriculture, and nor is No-Till on its own *(more at:

Dear Amir,

A Happy New Year to you!

I would like to seek your assistance in publicizing through the Global
CA-CoP network the upcoming Conference on Beating Famine in the Sahel that
is being convened in Bamako, Mali on 26-28 February. The Conference
announcement is attached above.

*Conference on Beating Famine in the Sahel in Bamako, Mali on 26-28
February*

West Africa’s Sahelian region is working to address its major challenges in
overcoming food security and creating more sustainable production systems. More
effective approaches are being implemented to attaining sustainability.

The Conference will be focusing on the solutions to increasing and
sustaining the production systems of smallholders across the region, and
the important successes that have been achieved in addressing the urgent
challenges. It will be profiling the solutions that have been proven at
scale, and that can be a major source of opportunity for massive scaling-up
to reach millions more of the most vulnerable populations.

These solutions will cover the areas of farmland restoration with simple,
highly cost-effective practices, the regeneration of rangeland and
agrosilvopastoral systems, sustainable management practices through
agroforestry and agrostology, the strengthening of value chains for
agricultural including forest and livestock products, and the directions to
managing conflict, reducing migration, and promoting youth employment.

The conference will be engaging all of the nations in West Africa, as they
all share common challenges in addressing land degradation and climate
change. This event will give the opportunity to partners to showcase
solutions including those under implementation through initiatives such as
Agroecology, the African Union Great Green Wall for the Sahara, and the
Sahel initiative that FAO has been supporting since the beginning.

We are looking to spur a movement in West Africa that will achieve massive
scaling-up of the proven solutions, link on-the-ground implementers with
government institutions, policies, and strategies, and with the
international donor community.

The meeting is being organized jointly by a number of international
organizations, including World Vision, The World Agroforestry Centre, The
Global EverGreening Alliance, The African Union, UNDP, FAO, IFAD, The World
Bank, and many others. You will find further details in the attached
announcement.
