Agricultural University on relay cropping of moong bean in the standing
wheat crop (ppt attached) using high clearance tractor and seeder to

*Subject:* Efforts to Relay Moong in Standing Wheat
Dear All,
With the blessings & support from you all, during the current rabi season
(2013-14), efforts have been made by Ludhiana CIMMYT-BISA team, to relay
moong in the standing wheat (ppt attached) using high clearance tractor and
seeder to advance the seeding date by 20 to 30 days for short duration
moong (SML 668/ SML 832). The following steps were followed:
- Wheat was sown in flat in paired row to facilitate the high clearance
tractor movement with narrow tyres (It can be done on beds also).
- A eight row high clearance seed drill was adjusted and calibrated to
seed two rows of moong between wheat rows
- The machine operation was successfully done and demonstrated in the
presence of PAU colleagues .
- Wheat was harvested at normal time when moong age was 25 -30 days.
The following were some interesting preliminary observations:
- The equivalent wheat yield was obtained in paired row wheat planting
in comparison to normal planting.
- Relay seeding of moong can be easily done in standing wheat without
any damage to wheat crop and date of planting of moong can be advanced by
25-30 days
- Wheat was mechanically harvested with three methods :
- BCS reaper binder (too save wheat straw)
-Combine harvester no loose straw
- Combine harvester keeping all loose straw but using spreader
- Relay seeding also eliminates the fear of early monsoon for harvesting
summer moong and we harvested 325 kg to 400 kg assured moong per acre with
this method.
- The detail investigations are in progress and we will repeat the same
trial in coming season in collaboration with PAU. If you have other query
please feel free to contact us.
I also want take this opportunity to thank Dr. M L Jat to be a part of this
development & evaluation and unconditional support to all our CA activities.
