*Global CA-CoP* *CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE*
*for sustainable agriculture and land management*
Dear Subscribers,
Please see herebelow a webinar announcement from the University of Western
Australia on *The challenge of managing fall armyworm: a new cross-industry
pest in Western Australia *by Prof Helen Spafford, Senior Research
Scientist, Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional
Development.
Fall armyworm has been attacking crops in Africa and elsewhere. Some
research has shown that Conservation Agriculture can contribute towards
reducing or minimizing the damage.
Western Australia's agriculture is mostly based on no-till farming.
Apologies for any cross-posting.

*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. *

*The challenge of managing fall armyworm: a new cross-industry pest in
Western Australia*
*By Adjunct Assoc/Prof Helen Spafford,Senior Research Scientist, Department
of Primary Industries and Regional Development*
In the last four years fall armyworm has been found establishing all over
the world and it has been problematic to manage.
With a large host range and high dispersal capability, when the fall
armyworm invaded Australia in January 2020 it was declared un-eradicable.
This insect reportedly feeds on over 350 plant species, many of them crop
plants. In large numbers the larvae can devastate a crop, seemingly
overnight.
With a propensity to develop resistance to insecticides, fall armyworm
continues to be a challenge for management in its native range and now as a
global pest that affects multiple production industries.
Western Australia is fall armyworm’s newest home. We will need some
creative and innovative thinking to manage this challenging pest.
*About Dr Helen Spafford*

Horticulture Directorate and leads the Department's response to the fall
armyworm incursion.
As an applied entomologist, Dr Spafford has worked in areas of weed and
insect biological control, pest management, insect ecology and behaviour on
pests of broadacre agriculture, horticulture and human health in temperate,
Mediterranean and subtropical systems.
In addition to her commitment to food security through effective pest
management, Dr Spafford is passionate about education, mentoring and
evidence-based decision making.
