This study looked at 1006 comparisons from 164 studies of crop yield
responses to NT in China. Results showed that a decrease of 2.1 ± 1.8% on
crop yield was observed under NT with residue removed (NT0) compared with
that under plow tillage with residue removed (PT0). In contrast, NT with
residue retention increased yields by 4.6% compared to PT0. NT also
improved soil quality with residue including increases in SOC, available N,
available K and water storage. NTR had increased yields compared PT0 the
longer the duration of adoption. They conclude that adoption of NTR under
appropriate site-specific conditions can advance China’s food security,
improve yield stability and alleviate soil-related constraints.

This study looked at the effect of CA on SOC for a highly weathered soil
using Brazilian Oxisols in a long-term incubation experiment under long
term CA. They also looked at 3 soil depths. A higher SOC accumulation
efficiency was observed for the 0–20 cm layer than in deeper layers.
Nutrient scarcity in deep soil layers; especially that of P, Ca2 + and Mg2
+; was the driving force limiting SOC accumulation. Carbon saturation was
not achieved indicating a high SOC storage capacity in these soils. Because
these and similar soils cover a large global area, they possess a large C
sink to mitigate atmospheric CO2-C.

insight:

This 3 year study looks at water management for a rainfed system in India.
It looked at tillage and crop residue interventions on field water balance
and yield under maize-chickpea sequential and maize-pigeonpea
intercropping.Weather data calibrated for 36 years showed that
incorporating crop residues reduced surface runoff by 28% compared to
control fields. However, the impact of tillage and residue treatment on
soil water was not consistent throughout the growing period. Simulation
results indicated that the conservation agriculture could save up to 30%
yield loss incurred due to water stress during deficit rainfall compared to
conventional agricultural practices.

This study reports on the effects of conservation tillage on soil
nutrients, water use efficiency and yield in wheat and maize in rainfed
regions of Northern China. Compared with conventional tillage, eight years
of conservation tillage treatments (no tillage, subsoiling and ridge
planting) resulted in a significant increase in available phosphorus and
potassium but also an improvement in water use efficiency in topsoil.
Yields of maize and wheat also improved.

Intensive tillage-based cotton-wheat in NW India has high production costs
and low water productivity. They look at CA based management practices --
NT, permanent raised beds and relay planting to improve this system. Relay
seeded wheat on PBB produced 50% higher yield and required 40% less
irrigation water compared to CT wheat. They conclude that PBB and PBBc +
mungbean were the best options for sustainable CWS under similar soil and
climatic conditions in India.

An interesting paper that looks at intercropping of pigeonpea in maize in
Tanzania and ratooning the pigeonpea. It looks at sole and inter-cropping
and conventional and no-till tillage over 4 cropping seasons. The intercrop
treatments yielded more total grain than sole cropping. 30cm ratooning gave
better maize yeilds while 60 cm ratooning gave better legume yields.
Tillage had no significant affect. Ratooning PP significantly reduced the
cost of buying PP seed, a major issue in Tanzania.

This study in France looked at SOC dynamics in a 16 year long term
experiment using 4 arable cropping systems without manure under
conventional, low input, CA and organic management. There was no
significant difference in SOC mineralization rates between all cropping
systems including CA under no-till. In particular, the increased SOC
storage in CA was explained by higher carbon inputs compared to the other
cropping systems (+1.72 t C ha⬚1 yr⬚1 on average). The CA and ORG systems
were less productive than the CON and LI systems but the smaller C inputs
derived from cash crop residues were compensated by the extra inputs from
additional crops (fescue and alfalfa) specifically grown in CA and ORG,
resulting in a positive carbon storage in soil. They conclude that
alternative arable systems can sequester organic carbon in temperate areas
through higher carbon input rather than the effect of reduced tillage.

insight:

This study looks at CA wheat versus conventional to see how they compare in
coping with climatic extremes in Haryana, India using data from 208 wheat
farmers. Their analysis shows that whilst average wheat yield was greater
under CAW than CTW during both bad and normal years, the difference was
two-fold greater during the bad year (16% vs. 8%). This is an important
finding given the increased vulnerability of wheat production to climatic
variability in this region.

This study looked at cover cropping and no-till management on soil physical
and chemical properties in a 15-year experiment in an irrigated dry
environment in California. NT increased soil bulk density by 12% in the
0–15 cm depth and 10% in the 15–30 cm depth. Results indicated that
adoption of NT and CC in arid, irrigated cropping systems could benefit
soil health by improving chemical, physical, and biological indicators of
soil functions while maintaining similar crop yields as the ST system.

Conservation agriculture (CA) is a potential solution in RW areas of NW
India, which can be achieved by switching from puddling then transplanting
of rice to dry seeding (DSR), together with changing from conventional
tillage (CT) to zero tillage (ZT) for wheat with surface retention of rice
residues. This paper studies this issue. Growth of non-mulched ZT wheat was
inferior to that of mulched ZT wheat, and that of CT wheat with and without
mulch, regardless of tillage for rice, although this was not reflected in
wheat grain yield. The results suggest that in a dry seeded rice-wheat
cropping system, surface retention of rice residues can improve the growth
of ZT wheat right from the first crop, although this did not affect yield
in the first three years. However, whether there is an adverse carry over
effect of the rice residues on DSR requires further investigation.

The paper suggests that global hot-spots for food insecurity occur in South
Asia and SS Africa. Adopting concepts of ecohydrology, enhancing green
water in the root zone, can create climate-resilient agriculture to advance
food security and improve the environment. An effective governance is
needed to implement policies which promote restorative land uses and
recommended management practices. Furthermore, payments for ecosystem
services may be a useful strategy to promote sustainable intensification of
agriculture by resources-poor farmers.
