*Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to regenerative
sustainable agriculture and land management based on the practical
application of context-specific and locally adapted three interlinked
principles of: (i) Continuous no or minimum mechanical soil disturbance
(no-till seeding/planting and weeding, and minimum soil disturbance with
all other farm operations including harvesting); (ii) permanent
maintenance of soil mulch cover (crop biomass, stubble and cover crops);
and (iii) diversification of cropping system (economically, environmentally
and socially adapted rotations and/or sequences and/or associations
involving annuals and/or perennials, including legumes and cover crops),
along with other complementary good agricultural production and land
management practices. *

*What Does Fashion Have to Do With Farming? Exploring the Growing Fibershed
Movement in the UK*
Similar to a local watershed or a foodshed, a Fibershed is focused on the
source of the raw material, the transparency with which it is converted
into clothing, and the connectivity among all parts, from soil to skin and
back to soil.
Fibershed is an international movement developing regional and regenerative
fibre systems, where farmers, producers, textile workers, designers,
distributors and many others work together to responsibly manage the full
lifecycle of a garment.
Join a panel discussion with Fibershed founding director Rebecca Burgess to
discuss how the movement started in the USA and has subsequently grown
around the world. We'll hear from those building the Fibershed movement
within the UK, including Emma Hague, who is founding director of the
Bristol Textile Quarter and started the South West England Fibreshed group.
We'll also hear from shepherd Gala Bailey-Barker of Plaw Hatch Farm and
natural dyer Deborah Barker who both founded the South East England
Fibreshed group. Abby Rose, of Farmerama Radio, will be leading the
conversation, and we'll have time to delve into questions from the audience
at the end!

*Grass, Soil, Hope: How Regenerative Approaches to Farming Can Help Put
Carbon Back in the Soil*
Join Courtney White, author of Grass, Soil, Hope and regenerative farmer
Dorn Cox in a lively discussion about the importance of regenerative
agriculture, and what has led to the growing popularity of no-till and
other regenerative practices in the last few decades.
Courtney has spent several decades researching, writing, and advocating for
the use of regenerative practices to combat climate change, in particular
in the American West, where he lives. Dorn, who runs a 250 acre certified
organic farm in New England, is also the founder of the FarmOS software
platform and the Farm Hack community. They will discuss the significance of
open source agricultural tools, software and data to help innovate and
measure the environmental benefits from regenerative agriculture, and what
they think are the best ways to help support regenerative farming efforts
around the world- and to ultimately put carbon back into the soil.
Dorn and Courtney are also co-authoring a book that will be published by
Chelsea Green in 2021.

*UPCOMING VIRTUAL EVENT:*
*No-till farming and how it can benefit soil and water *
*22nd September - 5:30pm BST*
A webinar exploring practical farmer led research into catchment sensitive
farming techniques and how this is benefiting farm businesses as well as
local rivers. What are the benefits of introducing cover crops and no-till
soil management techniques onto your farm? With the support of companies
like Affinity Water and Thames Water, farmers and researchers across the
country are working together to investigate how these practices can build
soil health, reduce their inputs and improve the water quality of their
local rivers. Join this virtual Groundswell discussion to hear farmers
share their experience and practical knowledge of catchment sensitive
farming and get the latest data on how these practices are benefiting their
land and rivers.

After a period of reflection brought on by a global pandemic, we are very
excited to be making headway with plans for Groundswell 2021 which will be
taking place at Lannock Manor Farm, Hertfordshire on *23rd and 24th June
2021*. Make sure you have the dates in your diary!
A significant amount of the work that had been done for the cancelled 2020
show is being transferred to next year and we are very grateful to our
partners and the vast majority of our exhibitors who have supported us
through the Covid storm.
We will be attempting to transfer sessions that were planned for GW20 to
next year but as the world seems to be changing so rapidly, our schedule
and content will have to evolve. You can keep up to date with Groundswell
by following our social media channels and catching up on virtual and real
sessions on YouTube. We'll also keep you up to date via email as plans for
GW21 progresses but in the meantime, have a happy harvest!
