Dear Subscribers,

Please find herebelow a message from Don Reicosky regarding the recent
article published in Nature by Pittelkow et al.

The paper by Philibert et al. (2012) on the assessment of the quality of
meta-analysis in agronomy is being sent in a following e-mail.

Apologies for cross-posting.

To all,

Apologies for any cross posting.

There has been a lot of discussion in the CA community about the recent
article published in Nature. The literature citation is given below along
with the manuscript attached for your consideration and review.

Article in Nature doi:10.1038/nature13809.
*Productivity limits and potentials of the principles of conservation
agriculture.*
Cameron M. Pittelkow, Xinqiang Liang, Bruce A. Linquist, Kees Jan van
Groenigen, Juhwan Lee, Mark E. Lundy, Natasja van Gestel, Johan Six4,
Rodney T. Venterea, & Chris van Kessel

Also attached are two papers that I think help explain some of the results
in the Nature paper. The paper by Brouder and Gormez (2014), published
before the Nature article, provides an elegant, logical, and professional
explanation with a solid science foundation. It is my contention that a lot
of the "no-till research" over the last 40 years was published with out
adequate detail in the methods and materials section with inaccurate
terminology.

The other paper by Philibert et al. (2012) (sent separately) provides some
cautionary notes in the use of meta-analysis techniques in agronomic
research.

Hopefully this discussion will clarify the complexities and the importance
of experimental details in CA research for the scientific community. Our
global food security depends on this critical research.

Don
