EU Soil Observatory Stakeholders Forum
<https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/event/other-event/euso-stakeholders-forum>:
19-21 October 2021

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is organising the first ever EUSO
Stakeholders Forum. This three-day event (built on six, focused, half-day
sessions) will reflect the challenges facing soil within the various
strategies of the Green Deal (e.g. the Soil, Biodiversity and Farm2Fork
strategies, Zero Pollution Action Plan) and Horizon Europe’s proposed
Mission on Soil Health and Food. In addition to a high-level panel on
recent soil-related policy developments, the meeting will establish a
series of dedicated Working Groups to address burning scientific and policy
questions (e.g. soil monitoring, citizen engagement and increased soil
literacy, soil pollution, erosion and biodiversity). Participants will be
encouraged to engage in discussions and possibly to contribute to the
Working Group.

 First Young Soil Researchers Forum
<https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/euso/euso-stakeholders-forum/first-euso-stakeholders-forum-young-soil-researchers-forum>:
21 October 2021

We plan a 2.5-hours meeting with parallel sessions (up to six) targeting
specific themes with 10 presentations (8 min + 2 min questions) and
30-minutes final discussion. Session themes will be assigned based on
abstract submissions. All aspects of soil research are welcome (soil
biodiversity, erosion, pollution, nutrients, urban soils, compaction,
etc.). *Are you a PhD student or finished your PhD no longer than 3 years
ago?* We want you to present your soil research at the Young Soil
Researchers Forum! This call is open to young scientists from all over the
world, with a special focus on soil research carried out in Europe. *Call
for abstracts opening*: 15 July 2021. *Deadline for submission*: 10
September 2021. All abstracts will be published in a dedicated Joint
Research Centre report.

Mercury stocks and fluxes to river-basins and sea outlets
<https://esdac.jrc.ec.europa.eu/themes/mercury-topsoils>

JRC scientists modelled the Hg pool in EU topsoils, which totals about 44.8
Gg, with an average density of 103 g ha-1. As a following step, we
coupled the estimated Hg stocks in topsoil with the pan-European assessment
of soil loss due to water erosion and sediment distribution. In the
European Union and UK, we estimated that about 43 Mg Hg yr-1 are displaced
by water erosion and c.a. 6 Mg Hg yr-1 are transferred with sediments to
river basins and eventually released to coastal Oceans. The Mediterranean
Sea receives almost half (2.94 Mg yr-1) of the Hg fluxes to coastal oceans
and it records the highest quantity of Hg sediment. This publication
<https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0013935121008501>
couples soil diffuse contamination of an emerging pollutant (mercury) with
sediment distribution models at continental scale. This work contributes to
new knowledge in support of the policy development in the EU on the Zero
Pollution Action Plan and the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) 3.9 and
14.1. Data are available:

PhD position
<https://www.jobs.ethz.ch/job/view/JOPG_ethz_CnG4ZFZHllhdJmuoLT> in
“Sustainable peatland management by mapping, monitoring & modelling the
Carbon cycle”

Within the Collaborative Doctoral Partnership, JRC and ETHZ are looking for
a PhD candidate to improve the mapping of organic soils in EU, model
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from peatlands and assess policy scenarios
for sustainable peatlands management. The PhD candidate will be hosted for
a period of 2-years in ETHZ and 2-years in JRC. The overall PhD project is
relevant to EU policies such as the CAP, LULUCF, Biodiversity Strategy
2030, carbon farming and Soil Thematic Strategy. *Deadline* *16.8.2021 *
