Dear Members,

From: Ian Ivey

Dear FAO team,

One of the key challenges for us in the region is to invest our time and effort into things that are really going to deliver the best value. A recent global tourism sector research project has provided some real food for thought for the Caribbean where it is an important sector. There are some things we can and need to do better at if we are to compete with the rest of the world. And that applies to food and nutrition, to investment and business development - and a lot more. This month's stories focus on people and initiatives that aim to create that value.

As always, if you no longer wish to receive these e-alerts, simply type 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the subject line and reply to this email.

Kind regards

This Month's RIE Net Headlines

Around the Region
New ways and thinking
Moving from the status quo is never easy. People live and work in comfort zones which they have grown used to. But, right now, it is really important that we as a region break out of those comfort zones - if we want to progress economically and socially.

Champion of the Month
Of real service
Sometimes you meet a person who really stands out - someone who invests a great deal of energy into trying to make a difference by being determined, dedicated, and not being fazed - even when dealing at the highest level. They work hard to change the status quo and move things forward.

Research Update
Caribbean competitiveness - tourism
Often when a well-respected international body produces a report about various aspects of the Caribbean tourism sector, any negative ratings or comments relating to the situation in a specific country are downplayed by politicians or major tourism sector stakeholders.

Success Stories
Thinking big
The world of business transcends borders these days. For entrepreneurs with big ideas, the markets in most Caribbean countries are simply too small, often very traditional and don't offer enough space and opportunity to satisfy their passion and drive.

Value Propositions
'Crowd-funded' food security?
For some time now there has been a great deal of talk about food and nutrition security at high levels in the region. But, as is usually the case, the most valuable contributions towards achieving real progress in such a critical basic human need area tend to come from innovative entrepreneurs.

Foresight and Innovation
The ethics of 'Big Food'
Big business is coming under increasing scrutiny as recent scandals, such as the horsemeat fiasco in Europe and the on-going financial crisis - which is now impacting heavily in Cyprus. In the past big business has got away with a great deal because they have been able to cover up.
