Dear Members,

Dear FAO team,

Firts, welcome to the ALJ MBA in Sustainable Management course participants. Great thinkers. Great markerters of fresh new business ideas. This month's stories reinforce the fact that we all need to get much smarter in the way we use resources. And there are some great examples of how that can be done. As always, if you no longer wish to receive these e-alerts, please type 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the Subject line and send a return email.

Look forward to receiving your comments by email or on the RIENet Facebook areaq. Our website upgrade is now underway and, once completed, will provide a much more user friendly and interactive portal.

Kind regards

Ian Ivey

This month's R.I.E. Headlines

Around the Region
Challenges and opportunities
Our biggest challenge in the region is to break away from the past and move beyond the commodity mentality. Nowhere is that more urgent than in the region's tourism sector - which generally speaking is not progressing as it should.

Champion of the Month
About leadership
Nelson Mandela was a great leader in South Africa. In a quite different way, Lee Kwan Yew could be described as a great leader for Singapore. The mayor of Dalian in China, Bo Xilai, is regarded by many to have been a great leader who transformed the city and surrounding region.

Research Update
The waste challenge
This update is based upon an excellent piece of work that was done several years ago by Dr Al Binger, a scientist who has been involved in many aspects of environmental research in the Caribbean and Small island Developing States (SIDS) internationally.

Success Stories
Realising a vision
We first met the person behind this story back in 2007 at a session in Grenada organised jointly by the CTA and CCST. That person was one of a number of well-qualified young persons who had a passion about innovation in agriculture and was prepared to act rather than just talk.

Value Propositions
The 'cool house'
Sometimes we try to make a square peg fit in a round hole. In other words, we take an idea or a thing that was developed in one environment and try to make it work in another when, in reality, it was never really designed for or suited to that other environment.

Foresight and Innovation
Heading towards peak water
For some time now we have been talking about water becoming the new 'blue gold'. Even major investment and financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs use such terminology. Peak water is something that is looking increasingly real, even though the planet is mainly covered in water.
