This Month's R.I.E. Headlines

Around the Region
Encouraging fresh new thinking

Developing and delivering long-term value-based sustainable economic and social progress in the region requires a big shift in much thinking compared to that which has traditionally been the case. This month we look at a number of projects and initiatives that are encouraging such a shift.

Champion of the Month
Championing agriculture

For a long time now, agriculture has been a 'forgotten child' in the region. It is only in recent years that it has dawned upon the leaders of most Caribbean countries that their food import dependency and associated bills have grown to an alarming level.

Research Update
Smart savings

Every now and then we come across someone in this region who has achieved real success in the international research arena. One of the things we have noticed about such persons is that they have spent some years working with offshore colleagues in stimulating environments.

Success Stories
Sharing the journey

In recent times we have had the opportunity to interact with three entrepreneurs who are at various stages of the entrepreneurial journey. So, instead of featuring one Success Story, we look at some of the key things that each of these three quite different entrepreneurs feels is important.

Value Propositions
The Caribbean cassava value proposition

There has been a lot of talk and activity around cassava in the region. It is being promoted as a key plank for improving national food security. There is no question that there is a place for cassava.

Foresight and Innovation
Knowing where you are going

Just recently I had a long discussion with a senior Director in a large Caribbean company that has had a history of innovation and has developed a strong market position over many years. However, they have now reached a point where, because of their size, they are not innovating as fast as they were.
