Dear FAO team,

A number of you are receiving this e-alert for the first time. The purpose of the network is to share experiences, success stories and research and innovation developments and encourage greater collaboration to advance the region economically and socially. Agriculture and food are big focuses as are renewable energy, culture and creativity and ICTs. If you do not wish to receive these e-alerts simply type 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the subject line by return email and we will immediately remove you from the list.

The network will become more proactive and purposeful over the next year. Details in this months updates - the headlines and links follow. I look forward to hearing your feedback!

Kind regards

This Month's RIE Headlines
Around the Region
New ways ahead
In the short time since the last update went online a lot has been happening. And a lot of what is happening is constructive, positive, and likely to contribute significantly to advancing the region economically and socially. Most of the moves forward are happening 'bottom up'

Champion of the Month
Cultural Sustainability
The only way any country and its people can really progress is through the dedicated efforts of persons who are committed to a vision and then making it happen. These are the types of people who we choose to be our Champions.

Research Update
Research Horizons
On Saturday, September 29th, ten high profile Caribbean-born researchers from a wide range of disciplines and living a number of different countries came together in a NIHERST organised two hour session to identify key areas that will be shaping the future of the region 5 - 10 years from now.

Success Stories
Looking to the future
A shift towards renewable energy and energy efficiency has not progressed very far throughout most of the region. In most Caribbean countries the cost if energy is high because it is largely fossil fuel based. Most of our buildings are not designed to conserve energy.

Value Propositions
Accelerating Agriculture
Agriculture became a second thought for many governments, particularly in the Caribbean, over the past few decades. A couple of centuries ago agriculture was the predominant sector. It supplied the majority of fundamental things that people needed.

Foresight and Innovation
Big trends for food and agriculture
Just two weeks ago we completed a 6 monthly global foresight scanning report for NIHERST in Trinidad and Tobago. Whilst doing this project we came across a number of interesting trends and developments in a big picture context that are likely to significantly impact upon the future evolution of the sector.
