Steps taken towards Recreational Fisheries Impact Assessment in the Caribbean
Santa Marta, 6 November 2012

The WECAFC/ OSPESCA /CRFM/CFMC [1]<https://faobbmail.fao.org/owa/?ae=Item&a=Open&t=IPM.Note&id=RgAAAAAf%2f%2bElLFhmS6C8IKk1mP05BwAKjodJFDRIRYFNub1NEWDWAAoeqwwFAACJ2MH70f8gS6fFvs7Se%2bPHABJYLkr%2bAAAJ#_ftn1> Working Group on Recreational Fisheries concluded its first major activity. An Expert Workshop on the Assessment of Socio-Economic Impacts of Recreational Fishing - the Caribbean, a Beginning, was held in Santa Marta, Colombia on 4 November 2012.
The Workshop reviewed and finalized a "Manual on economic impact assessment of recreational fisheries in the Wider Caribbean Region", which will be tested in 2013.
The Working Group members consider the manual a very useful tool for assessing the level of expenditures and associated economic impacts related to recreational fishing in the region. Application of the manual will a) increase awareness and understanding among decision makers and the general public about the economic importance of recreational fisheries to their countries and b) help fisheries managers increase their contributions to public policy discussions that affect fisheries management, conservation and economic policy.
After a test phase in 2013, the manual will be disseminated widely in English, Spanish and French throughout the region.

The Expert Workshop was attended by 29 experts from eight countries and territories[2] . The Expert Workshop was co-organized by the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and The Billfish Foundation (TBF). The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) facilitated the workshop arrangements.

More information on the meeting and its outcomes can be obtained from the WECAFC at
