Dear Members,
-----Original Message-----
From: Ian Ivey
Dear FAO team,
We begin another year with signs that things are starting to look a little better in quite a few key countries. The challenge for us all in the region is how we can benefit from improving global markets. We need to be in the right spaces with the right products and services and have the right approaches if our citizens are going to gain some benefits. The Global Competitive Index is a useful place to check out where we are doing well and where we aren't. If we can improve areas where we aren't doing well we will make some progress.
There are still one or two teething problems with the new website. Please bear with us as we work with the designer to correct them. As always, if you no longer wish to receive these updates simply type 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the subject line and send a return email.
Every best wish for 2014!
Kind regards
Ian Ivey

The Christmas storm that hit St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia particularly hard caused a great deal of hardship and anguish for many. The way the region quickly rallied around to help was a very positive sign.

Our Champion
'Winging it' - the Washington experience Our Champion this month is someone who has featured on our site in the past. The reason he is back again is because (1) he never gives up on his dream; (2) he grasps every opportunity he can to advance his cause; and (3) he is a great communicator.

Success Stories
Showing the way
At the recent Coconut Industry Road Map development workshop in Guyana it was interesting to note the differences in what was happening in various Caribbean countries. In a few countries the private sector is investing heavily because of a growing market demand internationally for modern, healthy coconut derived products.

R&D Update
Coconut Industry Roadmap
The final Coconut Industry Roadmap document has been completed after circulation amongst the stakeholders involved in the October Guyana Workshop. It is a comprehensive document which identifies the key issues that need to be addressed and who should address them if the Caribbean coconut industry is to benefit from the growing demand.

Opportunities & Threats
Collapse - or not?
A couple of recent articles focused on one important global resource and how the threats (and opportunities) associated with it could impact on the future of many societies, if not mankind in total. That is the global fisheries resource.

Value Creation
Who leads the way?
How can Caribbean countries improve their global competitiveness rankings? It's an interesting question with a complex set of answers. One of the useful places to start is the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) rankings, which are published annually by the World Competitiveness Council based in Switzerland
