Local and indigenous knowledge at Rio+20, how far have we come?

Community conservation efforts, like protection of the largest uninhabited island in the Pacific by the Tetepare Island people, have won increasing recognition on the international stage<http://equatorinitiative.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=711&Itemid=683>

...... in the Arctic, indigenous knowledge holders and scientists worked together on the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment<http://www.acia.uaf.edu/pages/overview.html> report of 2005

...the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples<http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unpfii/documents/DRIPS_en.pdf> (UN DRIP) was formally adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2007

... indigenous peoples and local communities negotiated on how traditional knowledge should be included in a new international protocol on access and benefit-sharing<http://www.cbd.int/abs/about/>.

As the world struggles to shape a new future at the Rio+20<http://www.uncsd2012.org/rio20/index.html> Summit, what gains have been made over the last 20 years? ... and what remains to be done to ensure the inclusion of indigenous peoples, local communities and small islands in global environmental governance?

As a contribution to Rio+20, Climate Frontlines and the International Council for Science (ICSU) are convening a plenary thematic session on 'Indigenous Knowledge and Science: From Recognition to Knowledge Co-production' on 13 June as part of the Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development (click here for details<http://www.climatefrontlines.org/node/646>). At the same event, we will launch an interagency partnership publication on indigenous knowledge and climate change adaptation titled 'Weathering Uncertainty: Traditional knowledge for climate change assessment and adaptation' (click here for details<http://www.climatefrontlines.org/node/645>). We will also speak on the panel 'The Contribution of Traditional Knowledge to Climate Mitigation and Adaptation' at the Rio Conventions Pavilion, 14 June (click here for details<http://www.riopavilion.org/programme/>).

Has the global community made significant progress towards the goals articulated at the Rio Earth Summit two decades ago? Have indigenous peoples and local communities succeeded in broadening recognition of their knowledge in policy and decision-making? What needs to be done to ensure that the proposed green economy is truly inclusive and relevant for the needs of those most vulnerable to global environmental change?
