Dear Members,

I Caribbean Workshop for Data Collectors of
Market Information Systems (MIS)
August 7 - 9, 2013
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

In 2008, the Market Information Organization of the Americas (MIOA) www.mioa.org<http://www.mioa.org> in partnership with the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) successfully brought most of the English, Spanish and French speaking countries of the Caribbean region into the MIOA network. To date, fifteen countries of the CARIFORUM region are fully active members of MIOA.

One of the first activities in the region conducted by MIOA was to assess the Market Information Systems (MIS) in the Caribbean region and for the past two years, IICA has been updating the assessments of six-flag countries: Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago under the IICA Project "Improving the Agribusiness Competitiveness and Market Transparency in the CARIFORUM Region".

As a direct result of the recent IICA´s technical interventions and the feedback received from the MIOA country members, two main needs have been identified as a priority for the MIS in the region: Data collection and MIS Management (Design, Development and Operation).

Based on those findings, IICA through its Hemispheric Project "Improving the Agribusiness Competitiveness and Market Transparency in the CARIFORUM Region" is planning to implement the I Caribbean Workshop for Data Collectors of Market Information Systems (MIS) in partnership with MIOA and the Agricultural Marketing Service from the United States Department of Agriculture (AMS-USDA) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 7 - 9, 2013.

OBJECTIVES

This workshop has three main objectives:

 * Strengthen and update the data collection knowledge, methodology, and skills for the data collectors of Market Information Systems (MIS) in the CARIFORUM country members.

 * Facilitate the exchange of critical and strategic information among data collectors of the MIOA country members.

 * Trigger the implementation of an Action Plan in each MIS of the participating countries.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The I Caribbean Workshop for Data Collectors of Market Information Systems (MIS) consists of seven technical modules with a combination of theoretical and practical approaches (learning by doing methodology) developed in full three-day (twenty-four hours) agenda. The workshop is designed to present a broad range of practices, procedures and skills involved in the data collection across the value chain (farm gate, wholesale markets, retail markets, etc.). It is expected that the workshop participants will share the learnt lessons with MIS staff in their countries and implement a Plan of Action regarding market data collection.

It is expected that at least one staff member of the Market Information System from each of the 15 CARIFORUM member countries will participate in this important event for the region.
