Dear Members,

Dear FAO team,

We hear a lot about 'inaction' in the region. But each month we come across many examples of 'action'. It's usually a matter of attitude. Those who wish to succeed in life surround themselves with positive people and 'just go do it'. This month's stories include examples of such people as well as some trends that are shaping the future space in which will be working and living in over the coming years. Last month we had nearly 30,000 hits on the website. It's a great vote of support for what we are doing. I always look forward to your feedback by email of through the RIENet Facebook area (the link is at the bottom of the Home Page on the website. If you do not wish to receive these e-alerts simply send a return email and type 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the Subject Line.
Kind regards

Ian Ivey

This Month's R.I.E Net Headlines

Around the Region
Time for action
Around the region concern is growing about the lack of progress in many areas - CSME, agriculture, energy, poverty reduction, communications etc. There have been hundreds of projects completed and numerous reports and policies written.

Champion of the Month
A point of transition
Some people go through interesting transitions in their lives. They start off heading in one direction but, over time, they begin to realise some of the things they are doing do not align with their values and aspirations and that it is time for a change.

Research Update
Sweet opportunity
'Your food is your medicine and your medicine is your food' - so said Hippocrates over 1,500 years ago. It is only now, as many countries are counting the cost of the 'junk food' diet reflected by increasing levels of Diabetes Type II, obesity and ADHD, that the link between diet and health is rising on the agenda.

Success Stories
Waste to energy
Small island nations are generally at a disadvantage when it comes to technology transfer and technological innovation. That is because their populations are small and the business opportunities are limited.

Value Propositions
The real side of funding
In many of the business development workshops we facilitate, one of the areas entrepreneurs and other participants are asked to address is how new and existing businesses can access funding to grow. There are many new and interesting propositions that have evolved.

Foresight and Innovation
'2012 State of the Future'
Within the Caribbean, apart from Jamaica with its Vision 2030 National Development Plan, we have few national visions to follow. As a consequence it is a real challenge to shape policies, to implement, and to make people accountable for delivering results because there is no long-term context.
