Dear FAO team,
Another year is just beginning. You can bet many things are going to change a great deal as the year progresses. This month's update illustrates some of the change that is already underway. It's really important for all of us that we make some bold moves forward. Only the old world is really in recession. Much of the new world is booming. There may even be a permanent disconnect between the old world and new world emerging. So where we focus and what we focus on is going to be important in 2013. It's time to decide what are 'myths' and what are real 'strategic options' for our countries and citizens.
May you all have a successful and rewarding 2013!
Kind regards
Ian Ivey

This Month's RIENet Headlines
Around the Region
Setting the scene for 2013
Even though many people are thinking about the Holiday Season during December, there are others who are focused on a new year and setting the stage to move things forward. Here is an update about projects and initiatives that are going to be of real interest in 2013.

Champion of the Month
Green-tech
The Caribbean region has been lagging when it comes to the development and commercial application of green technologies. But, because the cost of traditional non-green technologies is rising all the time due to increasing global demands for finite resources, those who develop new businesses in green tech are likely to be future winners.

Research Update
The status of agro-processing in the Caribbean
Judith Francis of the CTA in the Netherlands commissioned Professor Neela Badrie, Department of Food Production, University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago, to undertake a 'Survey and Synthesis Report on Agro-processing Enterprises in the Caribbean'.

Success Stories
The best mozzarella outside Italy!
Many entrepreneurial success stories are built around the decision of a person to leave his or her homeland and travel to a distant land to search for a new life. This month's success story is about a person with Italian roots who moved to Trinidad and Tobago 20 years ago.

Value Propositions
'Myths and strategic options'
This is the wonderful challenge put up recently at the regional joint CCST-CTA workshop held in Jamaica. The challenge is to look at what is being done within our region and assess the basis of initiatives that are being pursued in the name of improving the social and economic status of the citizens in the region.

Foresight and Innovation
The coming transport revolution
We are so used to living in a world of fossil-fuelled combustion or turbine engine driven vehicles that it becomes hard to imagine that it could ever change.
