Dear all,

I am pleased to announce that the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA)is going to launch an online stakeholders' consultation to gather information to devise and elaborate elements mainly for a definition of a Programme of Work on Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in collaboration with relevant international organizations and key actors engaged in sustainable use of PGRFA.
The Governing Body of ITPGRFA adopted Resolutions 6/2011 and 7/2011 concerning the "Implementation of Article 9, Farmers' Rights" and the "Implementation of Article 6 - Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources".

In particular the Secretary was requested to convene a stakeholders' consultation, preferably by electronic means.
In addition to the Contracting Parties, the groups of Stakeholders that are invited to participate are:
*       United Nations Agencies
*       The Research International Institutions
*       The Private Sector
*       The Farmers' Organization/Associations
*       The NGO's/CSO's

With this e-mail we would like to invite you to take part to the consultation that will be held in August/September 2012. Each of you are kindly invited to share this e-mail and the attached Concept Note to your network and associated organization for its wider distribution.

The topics which will be discussed will be the following:
1.      compile submissions on views, experiences and best practices on Farmers' Rights and on national implementation;
2.      discuss innovative partnerships, mechanisms and processes to support the implementation of Article 6 of the Treaty;
3.      explore the development of a toolbox on Sustainable Use of PGRFA;
4. gather information to devise and elaborate elements of a Programme of Work on Sustainable Use.

Participation will be open but you will need to register.
The discussion will be moderated and you will receive an update during August with the exact starting date of the consultation and additional information on how to subscribe to it (http://www.planttreaty.org/content/su-consultation2012)

Please let me know if you would like to contribute with ideas and any additional suggestions.
