Dear Members,

-------

Dear FAO team,

Over the past month many things have happened in our region that are contributing towards a better future. The only sad note was the recent loss of Mott Green, the driving force behind the Grenada Chocolate Company - a man with a passion and a big vision. As always, if you no longer wish to receive these e-alerts, simply enter 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the subject line and send a return email.

I look forward to your comments and feedback.

Kind regards

This Month's RIENet Headlines

Around the Region
Legacies
What's left behind after people invest a vast amount of effort and resources into projects and initiatives is more important than the actual tasks themselves. This month we look at several existing legacies and several which we hope will leave long lasting legacies in future years.

Champion of the Month

'Requiescat in Pace Mott'

In your journey through life you come across some very special and unique people with strong personal passions who have big aspirations and thrive on challenges. They are generally not driven by money but rather by a desire to take on a challenge and turn it into a success story.

Research Update

S&T and Economic Diversification

That was the theme for an International Conference on Science and Technology for Economic Diversification, titled 'INSCITED', held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from June 5 - 7th.

Success Stories

Science to business
In many parts of the world ideas that evolve in academic and research and development institutions become the basis of high value creating businesses. Here in the Caribbean such an outcome is less common.

Value Propositions

Resource Use Efficiency

Within the Caribbean region we often hear a lot of talk about how Trinidad and Tobago has a competitive advantage because of its cheap energy costs. But the real story is quite the opposite. In fact Trinidad and Tobago is one of the least competitive countries in the world in terms of resource use efficiency.

Foresight and Innovation

More demand, more pressure

The UN recently released a set of revised global population scenarios based upon four different sets of future female fertility assumptions - low, medium, high and present day constant. Whichever scenario plays out, it seems that planet earth is going to need to be able to sustain significantly more people.
