Thanks Laura for the mail and explanation. We acknowledge the great work FAO is doing in improving the food security around the world and Somalia in particular. Its interesting being very active in food security and livelihood intervention I am hearing the survey for the first time or this is not joint assessment but FAO only? I will inquire from our Local FAO office in Dolo. Otherwise awaiting the outcome of the survey.

Thanks.

Dear Ahmed and CoP colleagues,

The FAO Somalia team selected the NGOs that were/are participating in the data collection process of the SSSA during 2014; it was a very intense and exhaustive process as this exercise included the expression of interest of many Somali NGOs on the ground that wanted to take part of it; the selection was done in conjunction with the Compliancy and the Procurement units of FAO Somalia as all the final organizations selected had to comply with some basic standards related to delivery, performance and, if possible, present a proven track record of work with FAO. Unfortunately, many hard-working organizations that wanted to participate and that complied with those standards had to be left out as the seats for the training were limited to 25, and the expression of interest was quite high among local NGOs. My apologies if no communication was sent by that time to your organization.

Having said so, the surveys in Somaliland and Puntland were already conducted successfully during last quarter of 2014; now survey activities are starting from today in Gedo, Bakool, Bay, Hiraan, Lower and Middle Shabelle districts. We expect to complete the suvey on the 1st week of May;

Results will be shared with the community once all data (around 2,000 questionnaires) will be analysed.

I hope this shades a bit more light on your queries.

Best regards,

Dear Rashid,

The assessment was conducted by FAO Somalia, and selection of the partners was done by the same office. Much as you might have not participated in the assessment, I believe the report will be shared to all interested. Laura (here copied) is in charge of the process and promised to share the result with us.

Regards,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

There was an assessment being organized regarding Seed security and people floated their interests in being considered for the same. RIO forwarded its interest and willingness to participate in the same. We neither got confirmation (either positive or negative). How did the process end?

Thanks

Dear Winnie,

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It good that you tried it out in Uganda and there both positive and negative part of the technology. I hope with time, and regular adjustment in the available technologies we shall be able to collect real time data.

Regards,

Joseph

Thanks Joseph

We have tried to use them in the just concluded IITA/NARO USAID work on climate change but they were not very reliable. The make was not good and programme was not very appropriate. The batteries were poor. However, those who have experience in using it, say the technology is very good. The data is good and cannot easily be doctored and also makes analysis faster. If connected to the server, the data has back up.

Let him try it but with good quality tablets and well trained enumerators.

All the best

Dear Omondi,

No field test on the use of tablets has yet been done. I hope you will give us your experience.

Joseph

Team,

I plan to use tablets/smart phones in SSSA in Somalia.

Has anybody ever done this elsewhere? Kindly share the experience.
